Slipping torque converter
Hey guys, I haven’t checked in in a while. I’m having, what I believe is my torque converter slipping when pulling my 10,000 lb +, 5th wheel up steep grades. My trans temp starts heating up dramatically when I’m in lower gears, (48re trans), but will cool down as soon as I reach the top of the grade. I’ve changed out the trans cooler, which helps, but doesn’t fix the problem. I purchased a “ATS” transmission several years ago, and had to have it rebuilt about 2 years ago with about 35,000 miles on it. Still with the rebuild and another torque converter, (I don’t believe it was a heavy duty one) the problem exists. No issues when flat towing or not towing. The only common issue is I have a Banks 6 gun tuner. I’ve been told that the Banks tuner will send a code to cause the converter to slip if it thinks it may cause engine problems. Has anyone else had this issue? Banks doesn’t seem popular on this forum, but I live in California and need to get smog checks yearly. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jim.
