Silencer Ring question
Silencer Ring question
I'm sure this has been answered but for my sake somebody repeat themselves and let me know what advantage removing the silencer ring on the turbo does. From reading I see it increases the turbo whistle but what does it do realistically for performance?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Doesn't really add much, but if you're going for more power, anything adds up plus it's free.........
Yeah, for free I might give it a go. Just remove the keeper ring and take the silencer ring out? I do like the whistle fromthe turbo but you can see from my sig I don't have anywhere near the mods most of you guys do. Mine is more a daily drive that likes to run now and then.

Hey carl48, I'm just down the road from you about 35 miles. Look west to the basin and I'm down in that area most of the time.
As for leaving the vanes in for the turbo, too late, already have a tube from AfE in there and to be honest I did notice a seat of the pants boost. Besides, I lost about 4 lbs changing just the tubes out. There were too many baffles in mine to make me happy. Also, I'm sure the lost lbs will help with getting me up to the 25 mpg's some of these guys are suppose to be seeing!

No, it dosen't smooth out airflow. If that was the case aftermarket turbos would have it. It is to reduce noise for the general truck buyer. Just like all the baffles in every single intake from a 4 banger to big v-8's to even the mighty cummins. Removing it will only add some whistle, performance does not increase or decrease.
Not to be rude but that is incorrect. DC puts the silencer ring and baffle tubes in only to make the engine quieter. I removed the ring and replaced the baffle tube and drilled holes in my stock airbox and it is music to my ears. Now if I could just find an air filter that lasted more then a month. I live out in the country on a dirt road. That cummins eats filters like they are candy.
Guess that answers that but if it's blocking noise it has to be blocking flow either in or out I would think. Oh well, it sounds like it's a free but minimal change either way.
we did a test on intake mods and the ring does make a small difference the baffler makes a lot more compared to the ring and there is a huge loss in performance from drilling the holes in the box and the same with the afe crap. i destroyed the baffles in the elbow taking them out and when i found out what dodge wanted to get them replaced i decided to try a tag and it works better than the baffles. a qualifying statement we are after max mpg when towing at 65 mph and all testing was done at this one setting. there is a lot of articles on testing of the same product's except most of them dynoed the full range, example of where differences are is like the tag, it helped the most at mid range where we are running but becomes restrictive at wot. the afe and drilled holes let's hot under hood air in and causes a 7% drop in efficiency for us but for for short burst high hp players i can see where it helps them
Whenever a person lets the hot motor air get into the air intake, of cource you're going loose hp......cold air and fuel is always what a person needs for power increase. In warm weather, any vehicle isn't going to perform in any range as well as if the weather is cool/cold.
If a person mods. the airbox, always go from the front (after removing the rubber/plastic deflectors by ic/rad.'s) and the fender side, never on the engine side.....
