Shortage of AFE Torque Tubes?
I ordered a AFE Stage 2 Proguard 7 Intake System from one of the advertisers on this board. They promptly sent out all the items except the Torque Tube, which they showed as being drop shipped to me. When I called them, they said they are having a tough time finding the tubes anywhere, but as soon as they come across them, they will get it to me immediately. I really don't have any issues with that other than I am itching to get this intake installed.
Has anyone heard this? The tube seems like a pretty easy item to manufacture. Anywho, would I be setting myself up for future difficulty if I install the AFE housing and filter with the stock air tube in place and then replace that when my torque tube comes in? I know many have said the tube is overkill with a stock turbo, but I figured I might as well order it now in anticipation of needing a new turbo down the line.
P.S., I don't have any complaints about the advertiser. They just got caught short-stocked.

I have already paid for the order. I don't have time to put one together with the hours I am currently working. I got a very good deal on the Tube and the $30 I would save by making my own is not worth the time to go to the hardware store, buy the parts and assemble the thing. I am having to plan 2 weeks in advance just to find the time to put the thing on my truck.
Plus, given my mechanical skills, it would look like I made it.
What I am wondering is how difficult is it to pull the stock air tube out at a later date and replace it with the TT?

I ordered mine on the 18th and received a message 2 days later that it would be drop shipped in ~1 business week. If it makes you feel better (I know it does me
), my buddy bought an ATS intercooler for his '97 Ford the week before Xmas and it STILL hasn't shipped. He had originally been quoted 2 weeks at the most.

I have had the AFE Air intake both with Torque Tube and stock tube. No difference execpt turbo sound and no problem switching. I take the Torque Tube off when I go for warranty. Dealer seems to have no problem with the AFE Air intake, so I just switch the Torque Tube when I feel like it.

We finally got our shipment of AFE Torque Tubes in, but AFE has made a
change to the kit we wanted to inform you of. They are no longer
"mandrel-bent, powder-coated aluminized steel", but a one piece, thick
textured plastic uniquely shaped to provide a perfect fit. The price will be
the same. Hopefully you'll be ok with the change, but we'll be hanging on to
your order today to give you a chance to get back to us if you want to
cancel. Thank you.

Plastic??? They were backordered 4-5weeks last time I wanted some. I just switched over to the cool blue hose one piece silicone hose with inner reinforcements works with afe intake or Scotty ram air 3. Blue hose has insulation factor as well to keep out engine compartment heat.

millerwb is exactly correct, AFE has been working on the "polymer" Torque Tube for a few months now. I haven't said anything about it till the inventories were available which they now are. This is something that was done to keep inake air temps as low as possible, the polymer tube sheds heat and reflects it while aluminum will conduct it to a much higher degree. Plus you don't need any inner reinforcements to keep the tube round under suction, that just creates a restriction and redirects flow of the air.
The Roto Moulded process these tube are made from requires a special tooling process and it takes time to get it just right. The NEW Torque Tube is supplied with a 1 piece Torque Tube, 2 silicone boot connectors and the required hardware etc. This makes it the best for combating under hood heat, easy install and looks like an OEM product. Can't beat new technology, seems there is more of it everyday anymore!
