I had the exact same thing and loved it! Wouldn't have it any other way. Banging off shifts when hauling down the road is much better with the short-throw. No more hitting "7th" when aiming for 5th either...

Of course the G56 doesn't have that problem.

It's like people are so proud of their trucks that they dont want to point out its downfalls when people ask point blank how are 2003 CTD's???

All they told me is they get great MPG, and left out the parts about HP per dollar, slower ecm's, lower hp gains on just about all the electronics, no high idle, and "tranny off a dump truck vs a miata"

This should all be in a sticky or something. "The real facts and differences between years" like a buyers guide sticky with FAQ's

These are facts and we all know that 03's can make good power and yeah there's this guy Banchee that goes 12's w/ nitrous with his 03 NV5600 blah blah blah.

Some of us learn the hard way

G56 is far superior for the strip... Dual mass flywheel in front of it another story... Personally seen 4 failures now
NVs arent all that great for heavy duty use either, I got a buddy that has rebuilt his 6 times now....

In all fairness, he does tow a bit heavy, but still.

Best Dang trans they ever put behind a Cummins is a NV4500, now if I could only swap that into my '05 Auto easily

Needs to find somebody to rebuild it properly or learn to drive it better... That's crazy unless he has 3 million miles! I tow heavy and a few hotshot buddies tow heavy with the NV5600 and only issues they ever have is notchy shifting or burnt clutches... The NV4500 sure likes to drop that 5th gear though!

Eh, the 5th gear fix is easy. My stocker in my '97 was still shifting fine with 260k miles on it, and 433rwhp, when I pulled it, it was getting hard to put in 2nd and reverse, ending up needing a gear or two and a few other odds and ends, but still ran decent.

As for his nv5600, theyve been rebuilt by one of the best shops around here, Standard Transmission in Ft Worth, one of the big guys for the fully splined shafts for nv4500s/etc, he just never had any luck with them for some reason, he towed usually around 35k lbs, and as much as 45-48k lbs, he builds/delivers 5th wheel/gooseneck trailers...
Hes not even putting down that much power either, 440-470 I believe, sp62, tst, injectors(cant remmeber which ones right now), etc, etc...

Well I guess grossing way over what the trans truck was designed for (trans good for 26k) at twice the horsepower is basis for some frequent rebuilds... Cant imagine any other trans would fare any better... Mine doesn't see that kind of weight everyday, although quite a bit during the summer months (hay) and doesn't skip a beat...

I hope he's not trying to tow that much weight using overdrive.
If so that's probably why he's killing the transmission.

Good point, Mike...

I used to know the torque limit dropping from 5th to 6th - that'd be good to have on a sticky FAQ, eh?

Nah, hes been doing this for a while.(And knows how to tow that weight)
Just never had the best luck I guess, and again, like I said, I know hes not towing light, and a few of the rebuilds actually held up for a while, but still stinks for him to have all that downtime...

never said it was a REAL short shifter-or that it shortened the throws. only said it moved it closer and shifts felt better.

The only reason I got mine was, I got it used from someone who had got a new truck with a auto... Got one heck of a deal. I love mine, but that's just me. I have friends and my boss that I car pool with a hour everyday and watch him shift and I'm like "did" mine used to be that long of a throw?

I looked, hemmmmmed and hawwwwwwed for about 6 months before $pending the ca$h on it. I picked mine up on EbAy for almost half the cost of new.

I wasn't sure what to expect........... but now with it installed in my NV5600 I would HATE to have to drive it with out the shorty!!!!!!!!!!

Knowing what I do now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a brand new one at full price.

Took me about a day to learn to drive it and now I couldn't imagine it without it. But, I also go mine for like 190 shipped, and used. But, I love it. A must buy for a NV5600 owner IMO.
