S&B Intake
It will only be a tad bit louder with a bit more turbo whistle. No where near as loud as a AFE.
The install couldn't be any easier. Just pull the stock out and drop the S&B in.
The difference in inches may only be 1" between them but, the AFE filter is much bigger than S&B's.
Don't get me wrong... it's a very nice CAI but, not really meant for big power like the AFE.
"S&B utilizies the stock turbo elbow which has fins in it"
is that the ring that everyone is saying to take out? i plan on taking out the silencer ring ? i dunno i see you have a afe stage 2 maybe i made a bad choice in buying this intake!

The ring you're talking about is a part of the turbo. It's right inside the turbo when you take off the elbow. You'll see a retaining clip that needs to be removed and the ring will come right out.
You can always try it for a while. If you don't like it... someone else likely will and you can sell it.
well i want it to be loud but not too loud, i herd one driving down the street the other day and he had a k&n intake and that thing whistled so loud, it sounded good he also had the cat delete pipe on it, and he had the silencer ring removed, how big of a difference is there from having that ring in and taking it out, is it removed when you do a afe intake?

if you do some searching, you'll find that the K&N is not recommended to be used on a turbo diesel. I'd say away from them.
The ring has nothing to do with a AFE. It's a part of the OEM turbo. You can remove it anytime with any intake you have. From what I've read about it.... there's no benefit at all in having it or not having it other than db levels. Likely it's another method DC or Holset used to keep the new diesels as quite as they are.
If you want your truck to scream ( turbo whistle ) ... straight pipe the exhaust and install a AFE Stage II. They'll hear you comin' for blocks away.
If you don't want it too loud as you stated.... I think you're going to be happy with the S&B.
the afe is 80% louder then the s&b? that is kinda hard to belive but since you have had both you would know! so basically i am not going to tell a diff from stock to the S&B? dont see myself keeping this intake to long! LOL ANYONE HAVE A AFE STG 2 FOR SALE!

it will be louder than stock...you can take the fins out of the elbow, i did on mine. i just have a k&n drop in(no problems with them on any of my diesels) and a gutted intake tube, and no silencer ring and it keeps me happy!
they are in the factory rubber elbow that is attatched to turbo, they are just plastic, you can remove them, wont hurt anything but probably wont help eaither, i think they were put in there to guide the air into the turbo better
