Rusting MBRP

Has anyone had any problems with their MBRP systems starting to rust? I put mine on around Thanksgiving and on a routine look under the truck today, I noticed many small rust spots starting to show. Im sure that I can head off any real damage by using some old fashioned elbow grease, but is this a common problem or just my bad misfortune? Other than this small problem, I couldnt be happier with the overall sound and performance. Thanks in advance for any input. -Tim-

The cheaper stainless rusts a little. I find it rusts less when you keep it hot from use...if it sits around for a while then it gets surface rust. Cleans up pretty easy with a little elbow grease and good protective polish. Exhausts are sold in two grades of stainless 304 and 409, With MBRP 304 is the best and is called their pro series and 409 is their xp series. I don't care if my exhaust looks bad...dirty and rusty....as long as it performs good and sounds good and my MBRP muffler does. ks

The Rust is normal,it grows on top and can be removed in less than 2 minutes with a two step Down stream injection system, We Have one install at the shop By Bio-cleans systems. Stop By Here in MN in less than 2 minutes better than New.

t_george77,

I have to assume you have the 409 system, it's the same material the OEM's use on new trucks and will turn a gray/brown color and get some spots on it, especially if you live in the north with the salt and mag chloride etc. 409 is a magnetic stainless while 304 isn't and contains a lot of nickel and chromium. 304 will be around after we are gone, but costs more. Don't worry about it it will last a long time for you.

Mark hit the nail on the head.....it is the Chromium and Nickel content in the stainless alloys that make them stainless. The lower the percentage of these elements in the alloy, the more prone to the environmental damage they are. I can't remember which element 409 is missing altogther but that is the reason it does rust to an extent. 304 has relatively high levels of both Chromium and Nickel and is virtually impervious to rust.....the level of these elements in 304 also make it non-ferrous. In cases like this, you get what you pay for.

I got the 409 system and live in Cal. No salt and little rain but the system is rusting and looks bad. This is not the same as the OEM material which, I think, is aluminized. The stock pipe looked fine when I removed it and the new DPPI one looks bad with a lot of pits. The muffler is 304 and is very nice but the pipe is a different story. Best bet is to get the full 304 system 'cause your on your own with the 409.

I live in Cleveland where there is heavy salting of the roads all winter. 2 weeks into the first winter and my entire exhaust system short of the 304 muffler and tip is completely covered in rust. As far as I've heard though 409 will always develop an outer layer of rust but will take many years before the rust actually eats through it and becomes a problem.. I guess we'll see! You do get what you pay for, and when I bought my 409 system it was less than half the price of the 304 system, with a 5 year warranty...I figured I won't keep my truck more than 10 years and if it is a problem I can buy another 409 system down the road and still be around the same price range..
