Rocker Panel Protection.
Rocker Panel Protection.
Mornin' All.
I am looking for a product that I've seen on trucks before, but I do not see for sale anywhere nor do I know what they are called. It is a narrow nylon / plastic / composite strip that is mounted below the rocker panels and extend horizontally to prevent mud, rocks, debris from hitting the panels. (Kinda like micro mini running boards)
Anyone know what these are called or where I can find them? Anyone have them on their truck?
Thanks

If you want really good and long lasting protection I would get your rockers sprayed with bed liner. I have done that on my past 3 trucks and it has turned out great. The liner that I use is called "SPEED LINER", my local body shop does it for me for $200 and they match the paint. They have matced my green Z-71, my red 01 2500 Dodge, and my 03 Dually (but its black so the match ist hard). The best thing is that the liner has a great UV protection to it so it doesnt fade like others do. I havent seen my Z in 5 years but when I sold it the liner was 3 years old and still matched perfect. My 01 Cummins was the bright Dodge red and I still see it around now and then and the liner is still matching, and its 6 years old on that truck. My black is still just as shinny as the day it was sprayed. So if you are looking for protection that lasts that is what I would do.
Heck yeah, when I lived in WYO I beat the hell out of my rockers. Be carefull of the Line-X. The only guys that I have seen do a good job as far as looking clean and not fading up there are the guys in Ft. Collins CO.
What about the guys in Denver? They've got the best price on it. I think the ones in Ft. Collins charge $1100 to do rockers when the guys in Denver are $550. I'm not paying double if the Denver guys can do a decent job.
Never seen there work, and OUCH thats WAY TOO MUCH from the the guys in Ft Collins. I would think you really might want to go with the guys in Denver. Also I think the web site is superliner.com, you might want to check it out and see if there is anybody around there that carries it. Another group to stay away from is the Rhino Linings guys in Laramie

Driving on Gravel roads are killing the rockers. Do you have any pics of the line-X matching the paint? Mine is the Lt. Almond color (kind of gold) How do you think they could do matching that? One of the fella's that I work with has a brother that is a Line-X installer in Brigham City, Ut. Maybe I will go and chat with him about this. I know I am not impressed with the Rhino liner in the bed of the truck. It has faded very bad over the years and I cannot keep it looking good at all.

There is a new spray out called REFLEX and its like the midpoint between Rhino and Line X. They match color PERFECTLY. It is pretty impressive how close. See if anyone in your area is a dealer.
Reflex?
I made a few phone calls and it turns out there is a Reflex installer near me in Brigham City Ut. the Chevrolet dealer installs it in their detail shop. They claim they can match color very closely, but as far as I can tell this stuff is one of the new games in town. I don't think they have been around very long. I don't want to put this stuff on my rockers just to have to look at it doing the same thing the inside of my bed is doing now. It looks like hard water stained crap!
Anyone had the Reflex stuff on for several years? I wonder how it holds up.

Where I work we got the REFLEX system and our guy has done about 20 trucks so far. It is a rubber coating a bit harder than tire rubber as opposed to the other liners that cure very hard. I can't see it ever chipping and as far as fading it's hard to say but he has sprayed the front of a few trailers so we should soon see what it will do in the real world. The colour is mixed into the gun before it's sprayed so I would think it should hold up. Time will tell though. There are alot of different shades to choose from also. I believe he can also custom make any colour with some trial and error.
Get lined out
My old truck (00' Dark Blue) had the rocker panels sprayed with Reflex liner. I had Rhino in the bed but as you all know it fades pretty bad. The Reflex is about the same texture as the Rhino liner, but it seems softer and more easily damaged so I would not recommend it for a bed liner. But, it did have good UV protection on the rocker panels, made the truck quieter and looked sweet (I mine sprayed black). A buddy of mine bought the truck off me 3 years ago and the Reflex still looks good (better than the Rhino in the bed).
On my current truck, its black so the rocker panel damage shows up pretty bad. I was going to spray the rocker panels when I did the bed liner (new truck) but I decided to wait until I could see if the Linex had any UV fade compared to the factory black paint. Its been almost 2 years now and it still looks great, so I am going to go with Linex here soon on the rockers.
Just my experience, hope it helps a bit. And these trucks look sweet with rockers sprayed with bedliner. Of those of you that work in the oil field, like me, you know exactly how your rocker panels will look after a few weeks!

If I had a truck color that would look good with black rockers, I would get it done right away. You guys with dark or black trucks are lucky in that regard. I just think that my light almond color truck would look bad with black rockers. Now if the truck were white.... That may look good with black rockers. You guys with Reflex experience, do you think that if the reflex can color match well, will the softer texture be a problem with gravel and rocks bouncing off of it? Will it chunk off and leave voids, or just bounce off?
