Looks great, Don!

Wish I was already back to install them.

Ty & Eric - if F1 starts offering these, you can bet there'll be 2 different prices for new coated rocker shafts or used refinished coated shafts... Don really did a "labor of love" on these due to the galling.

well as usual... he couldn't come back and answer a simple question. I assume he just took care of those you for. I'm not looking to have it done and was only curious as to his intention by doing your.

Well, it's Christmas week... many folks are spending time with family & friends, and perhaps not concentrating on work as much.

I just figured Don's intention was to help us out with the thumper truck we're building, and get some empirical results for F1's new HPC.

I'm pretty sure we won't be building any more CTDs without addressing the rocker shaft/lever wear issue.

It has been goofy crazy at the shop and I have not had a chance to reply. We are off today and tomorrow, but I would rather be there than face what I have to do today........Christmas Shop!!!!!

The rockers themselves were galled so the only thing we could do is polish them with a 600 grit flex hone. I did not want to remove any more material than we had to. The galling is still there, but they are certainly still serviceable and very smooth now.

IMO, the best way to handle this is to try and get the coating on long before this wear starts. I want to give these and a few other sets a few months and see how everything holds up.

The biggest costs is not the coating, its the finish work to repair the wear. Literally hours and hours. )-:

thanks for the reply Don. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. It's a obvious problem with all our trucks.

Those look very good Don. It's something I'm going to have to address in the near future.

Is this a wear issue due to current oil specs? or design? a soft material?

Natural result of design, aggravated by higher spring pressures, poor oiling history and CJ-spec.

Mike, You think that CJ Blend oil contributed to the wear here?

The rocker design is the same as the ones used since 98.5 when the 24 Valve VP44 came out. This was never a big issue in those years. This is a newer problem. The only changes seem to be the oil blends and the use of higher pressure springs.

The levels of ZDDP is dropping like a rock as the oil has gone to CI and now CJ. In 2010, the levels of ZDDP go even lower.

I think the crappy oil we have nowdays is the culprit. We have never had as many cams with accellerated wear and rocker arms with same as in the last 6 months or so.
