rail preasure question?

at crusing speed my rail preasure use to be about 12.5k, now it is only about 8k. It I step on it the rail preasure dips to about 4.5k then come back up. could this preasure problem be, because of the cold temps well it is 9 out side? or could it be a fuel filter plugging up?

thank you,
Justin Allan

Have you tried unplugging the gauge then re hooking it back up? It seemed to fix my issues.

I don't see what brand of rail pressure gauge you have, but when I had my Dipricol gauge it would act as your describing. It would act as if it had a mind of its own when it was cold.

What is your cruising speed? At about 69, my Outlook monitor reads about 16K.

cstewart,
The 2003 and up trucks (Third generation Rams) have a high-pressure common-rail fuel system. Rail pressure is the fuel pressure running through the common rail.

Justin,
Does the truck run differently? Perform poorly? If not, it might just be a gauge problem. If it's not the gauge, is it possible that a re-flash might cure this problem?

truck is not as reasponcive as it use to be but not sure if it is the cold weather or not. Lack of rail preasure could also cause this as well. When you say reflash unload and reload the smarty program.

you might want to put it on a scanner and go for a ride. Your ecm may be commanding say 16k of pressure when it is only making 8k. It could also show your rail pressure is fine and the gauge is faulty. is your check engine light on?

I was actually referring to a re-flash of the ECM from the dealership. I haven't personally done this, but I'm sure someone else has and can elaborate on the process.
