First let me say thanks for the kind words and pm's I have recieved. I actually just figured that Lary had updated this thread about 2 minutes ago!

I will also say thank you to Lary for doing that. I have started to post on here many times and I could just not get the words to do it.

So for those that have kept up with this thread I will post the final update from me.

Last Thursday night I sat down with my wife to eat diner before going back to the hospital when we recieved a phone call from the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) telling us to get there quickly our son had taken a turn for the worse and things were happening quickly.

As you can imagine it was a heck of a ride to the hospital which is only about 6 or 7 miles from where we were at. We had just visited him about 4 hours earlier and everything was peachy and great still. We were shocked beyond imagination.

Well we got there and they had brought him back and it seemed that things were ok and they all looked relieved. A few minutes after we got there we started to loose him again. The Dr's tried any and everything, it was simply amazing watching them work with all sorts of medicine and equipment. Most of what they use is similar to sonogram equipment to look for stuff.

In short we lost him at 8:07pm last Thursday. Once we knew there was no hope and nothing else to do my wife and I got to hold him and be with him in private in our last few minutes.

The Dr's and nurses were fabulous and allowed us all the time needed while we were there. They do what they can to comfort you and they do a good job.

What went wrong was most likely something called NEC. Basically it is an intestinal infection that is caused by the blood not flowing properly throughout an infants body. This is actually very common in very small babies. Basically the infection uses up the blood supply and the baby cannot recover to make more thus it shuts the whole system down. They are able to give more and new blood along with other things to help stabilize the baby but, they are so small their reserves are not able to cope with it.

In retrospect if something had to happen this is something that appears to be painless as well as very quickly. I feel like I could only be so lucky to go so quickly and peacefully. Although, this is something you never, ever want to witness it was not dramatic. These babies can and do cry and show discomfort as I have witnessed when they changed his diaper, so I do believe that it was peaceful since none of that was evident and that was important to me and the doctor.

I hope that no one ever has to go through this as it is very painful. We do have a strong faith though and through this we have learned a lot and we all feel like we are better people because of it.

I am very thankful for the time we got with him. In the beginning we were unsure he would even make it through birth so I do feel lucky that we got anytime at all.

I am also very thankful that I have a job that both my wife and I both love as it has made the process easier. We have things we know we have to do and it helps to keep our minds busy.

Once again thanks for the thoughts and messages we have recieved, we do appreciate it greatly.

Also the service will be tomorrow for him so I will likely be out for some period of time.

I know I gave more info than most care to know but, the rest of the thread is detailed and maybe someday it will help someone else.

Sorry to hear about your son, the same thing happened to my son 20 years ago. I know the grief your going through. I don't want to sound cold but keep up the graces with god as times like this can be exceptionally difficult.

God bless,
Ron

Quad, even though you and your family are dealing with a difficult loss, at least this miraculous, yet tragic experience that has happened to y'all has brought glory to God - and He appreciates your willingness to speak of Him!

I just read this post today and was shocked. I lost my mother in January after a sudden illness and it has been tough. Couldn't imagine the loss of a child

Takes a big man to keep going in a time like this and you and others that offered their prayers have my deepest respect.

Iam going to Wv. to spend time with family I haven't seen in nine years. family, friends and spending time on here have been very helpful.

GOD BLESS

I lost my 15 year old stepson several years ago to a sudden catastrophic illness; it was very difficult - but you have to stay strong for those still with us.

Quad, I am so sorry. I do not have the words to express my grief for you. I pray that you and your wife will find comfort. If there is anything that I can do, please let me know.

Quad,

I do not know you or your family personally, but when a child is taken by the God, it truly effects us all. God has his own plans and sometimes it hurts the ones that are still here, but there must be a reason why God wanted your little one by his side so soon. We will keep you in our prayers!

Not much I can say, all I can do is put my hand on your shoulder and let God take the other shoulder and your wife's.
