Unhappy Probe Danger ?

Planning on installing my gauges tomorrow, did a screach & found troubling info on trans temp probe. Is it true that installing in the test port on the tanny is like asking for trouble ? Will the probe come into contact with moving parts which in turn will break the probe ? I see the cooler line offered by MassDiesel, just trying to save & go with the test port, maybe not a good idea??

Yes if you install the probe in the wrong test port it can be hit from within and damage the Transmission as well as the probe. The test port is NOT the optimal place to install the probe. The preferable place is the cooling line leaving the transmission headed for the cooler.

I was in the same boat a couple of months ago and decided to save a little cash by putting the sensor into one of the ports on the side of the tranny. A couple of hundred dollars later I have it in a Mag Tech pan. I put it in the test port and drove it about 20 miles. I found that the gauge wasn't working and when I was able to get the probe out it was damaged by moving parts inside the tranny.

The problem with the test ports is that there isn't always fluid at the test ports. I would bite the bullet now and get either the output line with the sensor adaptor or do something to get the probe in the pan. When I talked with ATS they recommended putting the sensor in the pan, but if I had to do it again I would drop the $$ on the output line. I had to go into the tranny anyway after I pulled the sensor and found a piece of brass missing from the end, so I bought the pan so I could change the fluid without pulling the pan.

That's where mine is. I get good readings, and no problems (knock wood ) in 15 months now.

I bought the line from MassDiesel. Well worth the little $$ to make sure you are getting the hottest point of fluid for your gauge.

My only problem was I didn't tighten up the connections the best. A itsy bitsy leak that with a little bit of tightening, just didn't do it. So off came the new line and tightened everything better. Now no leak and working just great.

But boy, That fluid is REAL hot and it hurts when it is just pouring out all over you while you try to finger tighten the lines back on. 3 quarts pour out real fast when things just don't go together the first time and it takes a few tries to get it.

Now, just too see the numbers higher would make me feel better. Mine mostly stays at 100* while driving around. Once I did see it hit 150* I think.

I used the afformentioned test port but my probe would not fit without interferance. I installed a 1/8->1/4 adapter and then back to 1/8 which I screwed the probe into. I didn't really plan to leave it that way, but I figured it would be better than nothing and let me make sure the gauge works. Well, I think I'll just leave it there. Despite not being in the direct flow of fluid, it reacts to temperature changes quickly and seems to be doing its job. Plus, I'm too lazy to change it, so there it stays!
