Performance chip - uneducated, need help
Performance chip - uneducated, need help
With the price of diesel at $1.29, I'm looking at getting a chip. I don't have the first clue what I'm looking for......
1. What kind of chip do I need for better fuel consumption?
2. How much does this chip cost (Canadian $)?
3. Where can I get one, I live in an isolated area in Northern BC?
4. Who should I get to install it if I don't buy it from the installer?
5. Do Dodge dealerships sell these?
Any help is much appreciated, I am not savvy with truck mechanics, I just love trucks, specifically my CTD!

Give Harry Kelleher a call at Peak Performance Diesel. He is in Langley BC and he can really help you out. Tell him I referred you.
First, the "chips" kind of went out with the Ford 7.3. You have "programmers/downloaders" that write the program into the trucks computer, or "modules" that are actual boxes that you would plug in to your trucks harnesses. Of those, the downloaders are by far the easiest to use for you and you can install yourself in about 5 minutes.
Dodge dealers will not sell these as they will void warranties.
I would recommend a smarty JR for you. A nice power increase with adjustable options and if you keep your foot out of it (hard to do sometimes) you can usually see a 1-2 mpg increase. And the smarty is not detectable by the dealer... see instructions. Price is just under $500 us.
Again, if you talk to Harry he can steer you to some other options to help as well. He's a terrific guy to work with and has a bunch of resources in BC.
