PACBRAKE Question

Hello I have a Question on the PACBRAKE setup. I got a 4inch setup that mounts up in place of the factory cast iron 90 after the turbo. They call the kit a direct mount system. I am being told they make a inline system. Any one have this type of set up and if so pictures please so i can see it. If you have it what are the pros and cons of it next to the direct mount system. Thanks

You can use in lines with twin turbos etc, a little more work to put in I imagine, a little more of a pain to work on if something ever goes wrong maybe?

Why were you considering the inline? I have the one that goes in place of the cast 90*, install was fairly simple and I really like the PRXB.

Here's some links:

Looking at this it looks like 'in lines' are made for 5" exhaust:

I know a couple fellows who have the in-line, but they have 5" exhaust systems and twins, the in-line was a must to be able to install a brake. They work the same, just in a different location. They had to cut out a small section of their exhaust aft of their turbos to install it. It was not a difficult install, in fact, just as easy as installing the elbow replacement.

I have the standard elbow replacement, all of 5 minutes to install that part.

I am not sure what to do. I am also looking at changing my turbo. The turbos I am looking at will work with the direct replacement to the 90 I am Bering told. Also was not sure about the performance part of it. The replcement 90 is shy of 3 3/4 inch id. I was not sure if it is worth the trouble of going 5 inch. Also wanted to know what the performance of the brake is like good and bad please. Thank u

You'll love the Pac Brake once you get it in. The size of it is the exact same as the stock elbow.

I'd go with the elbow if it will work for what you have planned.

My PRXB brake should be here tomorrow. I ordered from an old friend of mine and after some thought about the truck and future upgrade to the turbo he hooked me up with the inline PRXB.
It is set up for a 4'' exhaust as well, insrtead of the 5''.

I will let you know how the install goes after the weekend.

I have the 4" inline and I'm 100% happy with it. I had to use the inline cuz I can't use an out-of-the-box turbo mount on mine and I can move the inline (if I have a need to) to my next truck, no matter what turbo is on it. I got mine from www.healdworks.com. He can tell you the pros and cons of 4" vs 5". I think he has a truck with a 5" inline but he talked me into the 4" inline. Pacbrake puts together several packages. I bought the bare inline brake + the 4" adaptor stubs/clamps + the 03 controls and I built the air system. I imagine a turbo mount would be slightly quicker cuz an inline also has the added volume of the DP to pressurize but my inline is still plenty quick - I would do it again. I put mine just ahead of the trans x-member, right after the DP, where the pipe runs straight. I mounted the solenoid valve on the outside of the frame (protected from the exh pipe heat) just out from the brake. Craig

C Schomer: Thanks for your reply. It was exactly what I was looking for. I have a 5" exhaust and was debating between the 4" directmount and the 5" inline. Good to hear the lag is not problematic with the inline. Did you go with the ECM bypass switch? I wonder if you lose any braking power due to the extra volume in the pipe? I would love to see a picture of your install, sounds like it is exactly where I was thinking of installing mine.
I also noticed in your signature that you have Firestone bags which I have as well, but you also have incab controls to adjust them. What did you get for a pump and tank combo and what did you do for switches? My bigest question though is does the inline install require any welding? I presume you cut the pipe to make a gap to instal the brake. The brake comes with flanges that clamp on to the brake. How do the flanges connect to the pipe? By clamps or by welding? A picture would be great! Thanks for your help.
