Exclamation Options for Fuel Pressure Relief Valve

Mine has let loose. Yes, all me!

I am trying to figure out the best place to get one. I have a price directly from the local Cummins distributor, and it's in the ballpark that makes me do a bit of shopping around before I plunk down the coins.

Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks!

A different question perhaps

When the relief valve lets loose what happens?
  1. Does it vent to atmosphere (ever, under any circumstances)?
  2. Does it re-seat?
Thanks for any info!

Dumps fuel pressure from the rail to the return line if pressure gets too high. It should reseat as it is a spring loaded type popoff valve. It should never release fuel to the atmosphere!

So.....what did you do with the line that went into the top of it, cap it at the other end? Or I guess I should just say, how did you do it!?

The problem I have heard from most is that it is supposed to re-seat itself....however when it blows the pressure is high enough that it etches the seat with grooves from the pressure so that once it re-seats it doesn't exactly seal perfectly. The other thing I have heard is that sometimes once it seats again the spring is not as strong so it unseats itself easier the next time causing a lower opening pressure.

No real experience with this issue myself...only the info learned from reading these forums....if someone with real world experience on this issue chimes in take their info over mine.

Based upon searching the forums here and other sites' as well, there are several methods for capping the valve. Lots of reading for sure.

One last question - when the valve opens, is there always a code that gets thrown?

I am getting reasonably sure that I have a different issue to deal with than the relief valve. Fixing to head for the truck and crawl under the hood. Great information here as usual, and thanks for all the posts!

You can get a relief valve bypass kit, I carry one in my tool box. I had problems with the stock valve a couple times when my truck was new, threw P-0191 code. My dealer replaced it. Not wanting to get stranded with it stuck open somewhere, that's why I carry the kit. If it becomes a nuisance again, the kit will go on, warranty or not.

You can also get a modded valve, allows for higher pressure in the rail before relieving. I am not sure if there are threads here, but there are threads over on TDR and cumminsforum.com

Some that have had problems did not get codes, some got the P-0191, some got other codes, dowsn't seem to be much consistency except the P-0191 code.

So what is in the "kit"....? I was going to test my relief valve to see if it was part of my hard-starting problem by simply removing the banjo bolt and screwing a bolt or plug into the exposed opening. My ******* priced that valve at $400....!!!Yipes! - Curtis

There is a reflash for that code # P0191 too! Might look into getting that done as well.
