oops on ordered options?

thought I'd done all the research before I ordered my new ride.

If I had it to do over I would have gone for the 3500, maybe with the 6sp, maybe with an anti-spin diff. Oh well.

Now, down to the really minor stuff. I'm putting on my own mud flaps for $60ish. I don't remember them as an option except perhaps in the "off road package" and maybe not even in that.

I passed on the $45 tow hooks, because I wasn't sure what they were good for and I was pretty sure the threaded holes would be in the frame so I could add them. Now I'm looking to add them and only see them aftermarket for $100!!!

What are they for??
Should I add them??
Why can't I find them cheaper than the dealer price...

Re:oops on ordered options?

I found that anything I wanted to add after buying was significantly more expensive to add than bought as part of the package. If I recall correctly, the tow mirrors that fold out were $85 purchased with the vehicle but run something like $300+ to put on after. Same kind of deal with fog lights. If I'd been aware of that I might have held out longer for exactly the extras I wanted. OTOH, it's been fun shopping around and adding things.

Purpose of tow hooks?
If your stuck or you want to help someone who is stuck.
You hook up a rope/strap/chain to your tow hooks and
pull the guy out. Without the tow hooks your gonna need
to craw under the truck to hook up to the frame...It makes
things easier in the event you need to get pulled out or
pull someone out of snow or mud.

Yikes!!! 3/4 ton to a one ton, slusher to a hand shaker, good thing you got a 4x4 'cause without the anti spin you'd be an ornament in the snow. Second guessing that much maybe you'd be better to get the truck you will want in the long run. If you take this one and don't like it you might get hammered in a trade.

Re:oops on ordered options?

tow hooks? Sigh....They weren't on my truck that I picked up off a lot.

My fault but I didn't look for them as I had never seen a 3/4 or 1 ton w/o them. It only took getting stuck 3 times (once in damp grass) for me to fork over the $$$ and spend a couple of hours putting them on. And before the 4x4 guys jump on me 4x4 just means you are further in the woods before you get stuck. Been there done that, got the t-shirt and a jeep with lockers front and rear. So I get the best of both worlds.

That heavy diesel just sinks like a rock...

Re:oops on ordered options?

I think I'm OK w/o the hooks then.
Any time I've needed to pull anything with my truck I could always get a rope or something tied onto my hitch and it worked fine.

I guess I was a little surprized to find a simple aftermarket item like this MORE expensive than the dealer cost to order... odd.

And no... I don't plan to hate this truck or trade it early. It seems like a pain to tow and deal with a clutch (yes, I know the big rig guys do it daily, call me lazy) so I'm not that upset with the auto. I wish I could put an exhaust brake on it, but I'll live.

re: 3/4 v 1 ton, how different is the ride between them? I didn't drive a 1 ton because I didn't think I needed the capacity. Now I find that I will be pretty close to the payload rating of the 3/4 but probably OK there too.

Re:oops on ordered options?

If you put overload springs on your 3/4 ton, then you will have a 1 ton. That is the ONLY difference that I know of in the srw.

Re:oops on ordered options?

Mine has the two extra springs that came with the camper package. Does that qualify it or are there special springs?

Is it this simple??

I'm looking at a brochure and the big difference I see is in maximum payload. For my type truck it's 2270# for the 3/4 and 4660# for the 1 ton. I can double my capacity by adding something after market?

Re:oops on ordered options?

The 4600 is for the dually. The single wheel numbers are close.

oh, thanks. I guess the brochure shows that since the picture under the table shows a dually... other than that it's pretty confusing.

I asked because I was assuming my fifthwheel pin would be about 1200#, now I've learned it could be more... so I've got less margin. I was wondering if I could get some margin back if needed.
