Official DTR Members "Twins" Club
I the middle of the vacation here, have to say the twins do better towing than just "streeting". I guess with all out performance and the really big twins, you are expected to brake boost off of the start to get things rolling. No real lag problems with the load behind me, it just goes. So for more responsiveness on the street I am arranging to get a 22-23cm exhaust housing for my lower turbo. This should get it on line sooner where I need it most, but at the expense of extreme top end flow. Since I'm capped at 50 psi anyway, I think it is a good compromise. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. FWIW, I'm still averaging an even 14mpg for the trip. That is about 1-2 mpg better than before the twins.
I have to keep telling the wife the payoff for the turbos is a good one
. "Look at all the fuel money I'm saving!"

Back home for a day then off again. So round trip, about 880 miles round trip, I averaged 14.1 mpg hand calc. Weather was in high 90's to low 100's the whole way. Egts stayed manageable the entire distance, but no problem getting to 1350. Forgot about TC lockup at one point on a 7% grade, lugged it a little and hit 1500* for a moment. A toyota car passed me at that moment, I got ticked, finally downshifted to third, nailed it, passed him at 70 -- he ran out of beans and just snarled at me as we waved...
The twins are just great for towing up those mountains!!

Ok-- I guess I have to bump this up to get it going again....
Last night on way home from work I had a blow out on the inside sidewall of right front tire. The bad news is I was on a very windy mountain road. The good news is I was only doing 15mph at the time and didn't harm the wheel or skid off into the side of the mtn. or ditch. The bad news is it was dark and nowhere to pull off. Good news, I made it far enough to find a turn out. Bad news, I was forced to kind of work in the road as the turnout was on the other side of the road. More bad news, I was in my shirt and tie still. More bad news, out of cell range and late for home and dinner--certain wife is
. I got the spare changed out and made it home a mess.
But what got me was all the folks that drove by, and there were about 20 or so during the time it took for me to change the tire, not one-- NOT ONE!
-- bothered to stop, see if I was OK, needed help or anything. Is this is what society has become?? I stop to see if I can help unless it is obvious I am not needed.

OK -- I live at elevation and turbos spool slowly up here sometimes and I don't get over say 45 psi when the set up is good for 60+.
So it has been suggested that I get a 22 or 23 cm exhaust housing for the bottom BHT3B for faster spooling and keep the top turbo with the 14 cm housing so as to not create high drive pressures for the top. I have had another suggestion to do the opposite. Get a 12 cm exhaust for the top turbo for faster spooling.
What say you guys?? Give me some concrete advise oh ye wise turbo gods!!

Hey buddy, sorry about nobody stopping to help you!
I can relate to what you are saying though. Coming back from the Claremont, Va. Diesel Rally, I had a blowout on my dual axle flatbed trailer with my 96' on it and towing it with my 06'. As I tried to ease off of I-40 East, I hit a nail on the shoulder with my other front trailer tire!!
So, now I am sitting on two flat left trailer tires with only ONE (1) spare!! I finally got help from another DTR Member, my friend Chris Dubie (Papa Smurf), but while I was waiting for him to get to me, I was changing the two trailer tires, and just like you, NOT ONE person stopped,.....not even two (2) N.C. State Troopers who went by going W/B!! So,.....don't feel bad buddy!
BTW,....on that top charger issue, I had an HX-40/16 as my top charger in my twin set-up and changed to a Schwitzer 62/12. MUCH better response, take-off etc. and it certainly hasn't hurt my H.P.

OK -- so essentially, you still had a 62 blower but went from 16 to 12 in exhaust housing. I can understand the faster response, but you did not suffer from the added restriction and back pressure on the lower turbo?
