Newbie questions about boost on (mostly) stock truck

Here’s the background:
I bought this truck two months ago and absolutely love it – until I have to purchase fuel… Most of the time I’ve been pretty light footed and was getting around 16 to 18 MPG on the highway. With fuel prices they way they have been I was looking to improve the mileage and ended up purchasing the Edge Juice with Attitude (has a number of other features that I liked; turbo timer for cool down, …).

Installed this Edge on Friday night, easy install, very few cuss words – overall a pretty good experience. Went for a test drive in level 3 and no other modifications to the juice with my neighbors / helpers… So I was going about 20 on one of the back roads and decided to see what kind of performance I could expect (coaxed by my neighbor with a 1T DMax) and tromp on it – heads snap back and the next thing you know I’m at 70, the Attitude alarm is beeping and display says I’ve hit 39# boost. The DMax neighbor nearly unloads in his pants and says “I’ve never seen boost that high in my truck…”

I’m not planning on driving like that (I don’t want to pay for more fuel, tires, broken tranny…), but 39# of boost does seem pretty high.

Finally to my questions:
What kind of boost should a stock 06 normally see if someone has their foot in it?
How much boost is too much for a stock truck?
What kinds of damage can too much boost cause?

mine makes peaks at 32 then jumps down to 28 bone stock. The stock charger is still efficient from what i have read up to about 45psi. So you are still good. I don't know if edge has boost fooling which just tells the computer you are making 32psi or something so you don't get a over boost condition

You are not going to hurt the engine hitting 39 psi. I know a lot of guys that dont o-ring the head until around 60 psi or higher. To much boost and you start blowing head gaskets.

if it were me i wouldn't go over 40lbs of boost on you stock charger on a regular basis. also stock head bolts are said to be good up to about 50lbs so you should be alright there. going much higher than that and you risk blowing a head gasket

My truck will hit over 40# when I really romp on it. I very seldomly do it and don't worry about it.

Talk to a lot of the higher guys on here....anything over 38 or so you are pushing the limits of the stock turbo....the motor should be fine...but that turbo will start registering HIGH drive pressures at anything over 40# if I remember right. Why not upgrade and use a more efficient charger. I would just hate to see you grenade your turbo through the intercooler.

On my 04.5 I could boost up to 45 with my Hot Juice. Anything over 40 is generally moving hot air, so it's not all that efficent. I would leave your alarm set at 39.

A stock truck will handle 55ish lbs of boost at short bursts without a problem. Prolonged boost over 55 or short bursts at higher levels will require studs IMHO.

Too much boost can damage your head gasket most likely.

I did a lot of reading onthe 2006 turbo. The stock turbo stops working after 42lbs. After that it is just creating heat. The things you really need to watch that the EGT's don't get too high and of course don't nuke the transmission

Heck, I still have a plastic-tanked intercooler; grenading a turbo is down on my list of worries.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it. This is my first Diesel, and I’ve got a lot to learn. I won't make a habit out of tromping on it - better milage is what I was mainly after (must resist urge to tickle toes in fan blade) and I seem to be getting that now. It was the combination of my buddy's reaction and the alarm on the Attitude that had me concerned.

Higher drive pressure over spins the turbo= head gasket goes boom
