Turbo selection

I'm afraid that the person you spoke with was basically trying to make a sale and did not have a whole lot of knowledge about their products. If you want to make more modifications you may arrive at the point you wish to be but it is going to cost money, time, and more fuel.

I suspect that you are in the Salt Lake, UT area and the elevation does not help you either. I am running a HTB2 (62/12) and sometimes it lags a bit especially at elevation when towing heavy but I can downshift my 6 shooter and all is well.

I would suggest that you contact the second guy from the vendor and plead your case about the current turbo you have not performing as you expect. Make sure you are realistic about what you want your truck to do and any future modifications that you are going to do. Just remember your turbo design prior to the future modifications may not perform as expected until those modifications are implemented.

I am leaning towards the Garrett. Its a little more money, but might as well do it right the 2nd time around. I am going to call Garrett direct and chat with them. I have read other forums where garret slightly customized it one way or another depending upon application. The only bad thing I read about the garret was on one forum he was getting surging at certain rpm. Had to put in a can, but I'm guessing from all else I read that that was a special circumstances deal.

If your going to go Garett call Tom at Turbo Resource, the guy knows his Garett's and how to set them up on these trucks. Call him and do it right. Good luck.

I will second what Rye says above.

Call Tom, mention my screen name here and he'll help you out; he built my turbos for me and really is nice to deal with. He will custom build the turbo for you as well.

In my opinion the turbo sold you is a poor choice for any use. The 74 turbine is just too big for the 62 inducer. A 71 is as large as anyone could use for that 62 IMO. By the time you push enough fuel to really need that big of a turbine (74) the 62 inducer wheel isn't capable of providing enough air for that fuel... so it is a bit of an unbalanced turbo in that way. Their Silver Bullet (66mm inducer) on the other hand is just right for it.

The super B special is a 64mm inducer that produces nearly the same air as the silver bullet-- it's a great turbo, but still not what you want/need. Their 63mm turbo (Killer B) is a better choice.

You are simply going to have to unwrap the deal on that phat shaft to get what you need. Going the way of the Garrett is a sound choice and Tom can really help you. Let him know you are at elevation, choose the smaller (.89) A/R exhaust housing.

BB turbos are more frequent now especially since price is a lot closer, but they are still not well understood and I still see a lot of ignorant posts regarding them. That doesn't mean I am saying they are for everyone or the better solution in all cases.

But someone like me who tows a 36' Montana Fiver with BB twins over the Donner Pass in summer with no issues... and the small turbo is a 68mm inducer... that should tell you a little something about spool and a Garrett. I do smoke some off the line and can't mash the throttle but it isn't excessive... I also have some -- ahem-- larger sticks too.

Exactly. for what you have and what you plan on doing, a 13mm would be perfect. I love my HTT 62-65-13 for pulling. When matched up with my mods and tranny, I can haul just about anything I want up any grade without ever coming out of OD. And thats with loads up and over 20,000

I was reccomended a 62/71/14 for mine a few years back and have learned how to drive with it, however I am still debating on sending it back to II to have them change the 71 to a 65 for me as I was just recently told that it would work much better on my truck for plowing and towing my RV.

Is it possible to have a smaller wheel put on like jeephauler is stating? I have a Silver 62, 62/74/14 that would love to put a smaller exhaust wheel on and use in my Twin setup if possible? What is needed to do something like this? Does exhaust wheel and housing need to change?
Maybe an option for Hot_runner58 that started this thread..

I sent an email to Industrial Injection yesterday to find out if what I was told is correct. I do beleive it is as I was told that by a very reputable dealer/installer that deals with them. I will let you know what I find out when they reply.

well guys, a little update for you. Called II, and he told me there is no better turbo for my purpose than the one I have, and that he wouldn't put a garrett on a dodge..... so needless to say I am pretty frustrated at them as I have explained my problems, and was told I'm not pushing enough fuel and need to upgrade to a 33% bigger cp3. I will try calling Tom, thanks for the recommend. I am trying to get this turbo sold, I have had several calls on it, but no cash in hand yet. The company didn't think they needed to take it back, since it was just a suggestion, which seems crap to me. I also looked at the htt that was mentioned, but am still going to try the garrett at this point if I can get the money.

More fuel will just mean more smoke till it finally lights. WTH?

Turbos are another one of those things where everyone has an opinion and they can empty your wallet......

I agree with you on every one has an opinion. when talking to the place that sold me this turbo, I called back, talked to a 3rd salesman, didn't tell them who I was, just said what I had and my goals, and this guy told me I needed a 64 something something, and of course I thought really guys!

Hey runner... Cooter in the post above your last one runs a garrett 3782... his power numbers are there for all to see (even on those 22.5 wheels)

Ask him what he thinks of his choice.

And Redding is a very hot place (meaning thinner air-- more smoke potential)

Yeap, with your mods I would run the Garrett.... If I ever did twins, they would be BB for sure.

Those numbers were when I was running the 62/65-13ss and the stock lift pump on a hot day. I forgot to turn the AC off for the runs as well......

The Garrett is much stronger on the bottom and WAY less smokey. I tow heavy at high elevation too....Been running 30k gcvw.
