Talking New turbo installed, have questions...

I put in my SPS62 last night nd really love it, looks good (no pics yet) sounds good and seems to keep temps under control...but alas I have some questions that I would like answered....please....

1. I have noticed spool-up is significantly slower than stock, I am no longer able to lug it from 1500-1700rpm's without stopping traffic behind me, this concernes me on two fronts. One being that this was supposed to be a great turbo for towing and daily driving, but with not being able to lug it, is the only way around it to have lots more rpm's??? And two being how do some of you leave a dead stop and not cloud your trailer or boat in soot???

2. Will spool-up get better as the turbo breaks-in??? I currently have 75miles on it and have pushed to 35-38psi a few times, what is the proper break-in procedure, if there is one???

3. Might some of you know which TNT tune would be the best to help spool?
I had started out on SW#5 and default on everything else but TQ on #2, and today when I had some time I bumped it up to SW#7 and Tq #3, this seemed to help some but still wondering if you guys have ideas for this???

4. Driving around seems that my EGT's are high compared to stock turbo, same hill I drive home everyday at 70mph, before with stock turbo I would see 8-10 psi and 600-700*. Now with the new turbo, same hill and same speed I now see 2-4psi and 1000-1100*, but once I input more throttle boost comes up to 10psi and temps down to 900*, but by this time I am doing 80 mph...any thoughts???

5. Overall temps are down, with the set-up listed above at 3/4 throttle I see 35-38 psi and EGT's int the 1200* area, which is about the same if not a little better than stock, but I know that my Drive Pressure is way down, thus saving my HG and anything else affected by DP.

If anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to go for spool-up I would greatly appreciate it....Oh and BTW, this things kicks it hard when asked too....!!!!!

Out of curiosity is it a 62/71/12 or 62/71/14?

3. Might some of you know which TNT tune would be the best to help spool?

SW#7, Tq=3, RP=3, Timing=2....granted that's on a stock turbo...but it does spool it much closer to beta 4.4 than any other settings i've tried.

The extra rp will help....and i have a stock turbo, so take the rest with a grain of salt...but i was under the impression that for those of us with automatics (and not pushing 550+hp), or the towing crowd that a 62/65/12 or 13 would be best for reduced lag / near stock spool....

I will try the extra RP tomorrow....it was either the 62/65/13ss from HTT or this 62/71/14 from Industrial, and since I only tow once in a while and my goals are in the 550hp range i went with the II....just need to play with it and let it break-in

Congrats on the new turbo. All of the issues you described are normal with a larger single and heavy fueling.

I agree with the above... you will get a little better with break in, but not what you are expecting. What you are experiencing is completely normal. Remember the turbo world is about compromises... you got a performance turbo... so it likes fuel and rpms.

Think for a moment that the new exhaust (turbine) housing is more than 50% bigger than your stock to provide more flow... that 9cm EH for the stock is designed for "right now" spool and lower HP range... The larger the EH, the farther up the RPM range spool will go. Same thing for the compressor wheel too... the bigger it is, the laggier it will be.

X3, The SPS62 is pretty big on the exhaust side to be lugging around. It is meant to be flogged and as you already noticed, it works great under those circumstances. I have a stick so I can work around it but I find I need to run about 500RPM higher than before to maintain a no-soot acceleration. With TNT on #9 I found it was impossible to not smoke no matter how light I was on the pedal. Unfortunately for you, its the nature of the beast. Depending on your cash flow, you might want to hold onto the stocker and run a set of MPI twins with a different bottom. I dont know if you could run that SPS in a set of twins and have any better spool. I am twins retarded.

What tune are you running on the Smarty? With my new turbo (similar to yours, I believe) the 4.4 really works great. I do notice I can really smoke people out if I stab it at a low RPM. I shift at like 2100-2400 when putting around now.

I just got the same turbo in the mail yesterday....I will be putting it on tonight so the experimenting will begin here too. My truck see's mostly towing action when I am using it so the low RPM/Temp rise was a concern for me with a larger turbo. I had the dealership flash the O/D lockout option into mine (05 didn't have that option) and use this now to keep my RPM's up around 1900-2000 when not on the highways, hopes are that this will work with the SPS 62 as good as it did with the stocker.

Like you though, I get tired of scrubbing down the passenger side and rear of the 5th wheel after each long haul from a nice coating of soot. Maybe this year that won't be an issue with the new turbo and maybe slowing down a touch...maybe.

In twins, the SPS would have even slower spool...

I was running TNT, SW#9 TQ=4, TM=2 RP=2, and it smokes SOOOOO bad, today I loaded SW#1, TQ=3, TM=3, RP=2, and either the low SW# or lower timing #, one of them is keeping the smoke under control...

So in my further pursuit of happiness I am going to be spending some time this weekend bumping up the timing and sw#'s independently until the smoke is bad again, and then I will know what work good for me, and also will know that I can crank it up for the dyno and turn it down for everyday driving...

The lag is not what is bothering me, its just the excessive amount of smoke tha comes from the lag...maybe might try stock programming and see if it smokes less and still spools the same????
