I noticed that Nitto has released a 295/70-17 in their Terra Grappler series. At least I think it's new as I don't recall seeing that size offering before. I'm thinking of going with the BFG 285's or the Nitto 295's (both have the same 3,195 lb-D load rating). Are there any opinions on Nitto's out there? Not sure if they have 3 ply sidewalls like the BFG's do.

I did a lot of searching for 17 inch tires and I never saw these so I'm fairly certain they are new. I am having a heck of a time deciding on what new tires to put on "Smoke". Two weeks ago I had myself convinced to go with the Pro Comp 35x12.50x17's with a 2 inch spacer. Last week I had myself convinced to go with the 285x70x17 BFG A/T's without any spacer. Now this week . . . . its too early in the week to decide but maybe these 295x70x17 Nitto's might be a good compromise.

I now EXACTLY what you mean...the Nitto's seam like a good compromise to me too. I can't say that I've ever heard any bad things about them and they seem to get great reviews.

I called Discount Tire and they contacted Nitto for me today and they aren't out yet and they didn't indicate when they would be. I sent a message to Nitto as well but if it's going to be 6 months to a year before they're out I'll probably end up getting the BFG's instead (hopefully I'll here back soon though)

I wish there were some good side view pic's of the 285 BFG's on our trucks. They seem to look pretty good on the '05 Power Wagon but again, no side pic so it's hard to tell.

BFG all the way. Best tires ever made. Either AT or MT depending on what you want in the 315 or 35 size with a 2" spacer.

 

Unfortunately I haven't heard too many good things about the Nitto Terra Grapplers. A few of my Jeep buddies had them and said they were a pain to get balanced correctly and were abnoxiously loud. They also wore horrible compared to the BFGs they had before. Personally I'm going to stick with BFGs...can't go wrong with them. Nitto on the other hand makes pretty good passenger car tires.

Is there a reason you are shying from the 315/35 size? That should be a good set up with a siz shooter and 3.73's. If you had an auto, you might want 4:10's...

I know a lot of guys are running them quite successfully but I do have a few concerns:
1. Reduced power in 6th gear. I drive with the Volumizer on the "60 hp" position and absolutely love the fact that I just roll into it at any speed from 45 mph on up and it just GOES!
2. Fuel mileage. Maybe the 35" are a little over the top and would really hurt mileage.
3. The "slippery slope" problem. If you get 35", you really should get a small lift. If you get a small lift, you need to get new shocks. If you get a lift and shocks, you need to get an alignment. By now my $800 tires are up to $1500!

Nitto, Toyo, same tire. Mine balanced VERY easily, and I CAN NOT hear them. FYI they are almost 14" wide!!! They are the only tire I know of with a 50k milage warranty.

Only problem, only rated at 3000# I did have 3500-3600 on them with no problems, but not very comfortable with it.

I did not noice any decrease in performance...I run my C3.2 in the mid setting most of the time and it handled the increase in tire size just fine. My mileage has never been that good, but I would have to blame most of that on my driving style and the configuration of my truck. The difference in cost ($300 or more if you get take offs) will buy a little extra gas...

 

I think I figured out why your mileage is not soo good . . . . . .
