The only way to do HID is to replace the module in entirety.
Beware of higher wattage bulbs, as the factory wiring is often not up to the higher current. Melting your harness is no fun.
I've only found one projector headlight setup that looks proper to me. It actually uses an OEM Hella headlight module (straight off a European car), which has EXCELLENT beam pattern.
