I have heard this too on my 03 and never could find out what it was but was told several times it was normal.

I have also heard this I thought it was number 1 injector cycling. Was not the pump makeing the noise and don't think the grid heater makes any noise eather.

As far as I know it is the injectors cycling.

ticking

I have the same thing with my 03 SO. I read on another site that it is a sign that your battery stregnth is low???? I don't know if this is true or not. But...I notice the only time my truck does it is when I leave my cell phone charging in there all night and go to start it in the morning. who knows, I have had my truck for almost a year and put close to 18K on it and I find new little quirks all the time...still runs like a champ and better than my old 2000 powerstroke

#1 and 5 injectors purging air from the rail before startup. These things idle at about 7500 PSI so upon shutdown the rail bleeds pressure so that pressure doesn't sit in there the whole time. At least that's what I understand.
