Anybody have one of these? Are they worth the 260 bucks? and what about synthetic gear lube is it worth the 15$'s a quart? Also should I use 85-140?

 

Im not sure about the gear lube but the Mag Hytec is definately worth the money, check out geno's for the other brand as well(cant recall the name right now.)

 

IF you tow... Definately worth it... I have one on order....

I think it's worth the $$$. Like the tranny pan, it has MORE volume of fluid which keeps your fluids cooler and the magnetic pick-up for picking up little shavings and such which will take out your bearings.

Another issue. Ages ago on either DTR or TDR a guy who had worked at Dana and then went to work at AAM said the only thing he didn't like was the closeness of the pan to the gears. If you have less space then you have less fluid your gears are operating in and that's why he liked the larger cover and the other features I mentioned. Sidebar,... it looks cool as heck!

 

I agree. I am getting one as well. Not only does it allow easier oil changes, but it has a magnet suspended in the oil. It is in the dipstick.

Same here...both tranny and diff. I like them alot. PML is another brand to consider that might be a little bit cheaper than the MH.

 

I have the rear Mag-Hytech cover & like it alot. I have it filled with Amsoil 75-90. (7+ quarts) I like to be able to check fluid level & condition via the magnetic dipstick. I was told by Chuck @ Duluth Diesel, that unless I tow extremely heavy on a constant basis, that any thicker oil would just waste me mileage. As far as the front cover, they have had alot of clearance probs & you may want to check to see if they have cleared them up.

At the risk of being flamed,,,, INHO I do not think increased oil capacity is a good idea weather it is in the tranny or in the diffys, for one I think the extra fluid will act as a heat sink and keep the heat in the tranny or diffy longer as well as causing more stress whenit is colder outside.. The diff is designed to operate in only so much oil especially when it is cold, I am not sure if the extra stress in cooler conditions is smart. I will continue to change my diffy oil every 50k using stock fluid levels and full syntheticfluid. Maybe one day after all my other upgrades I will update the covers for the *bling* factor and at stock levels only. I plan on using the same practice when I service my tranny with upgrading to a drainplug kit with magnet only for the stock pan if I need additional cooling for my tranny I will install and additional cooler not add more oil ....

has mag hytec cleared up the problems with the front covers? This is the only reason i havent bought the set yet..

The boss for drilling and tapping the temp probe is just below the level check plug, on the right side of the cover in the picture.
