Lifts and tires

I'm looking for a 04 3500 SRW quad cab short bed 4x4. HO/6spd. I'm looking to lift it 2" and throw some 36x13.50x20 Swamper Iroks under it on custom dually wheels. I've seen them on a lifted 1500 that had 6" of lift and there was PLENTY of room under there. Just wondering if I should get 4.10s or 3.73s? Most of the time I will be pulling around 10-14,000 lbs at 65-70mph so I don't want it revving too high, so I'm leaning to 3.73s. Suggestions?

Re:Lifts and tires

I would go with 4.10's if you're running 36" tires.

Thanks. I'd go with 19.5" wheels but I can't find tires agressive enough(you should see some of the mud holes I drive through to pick up vehicles!)

Re:Lifts and tires

I think you're better off using the 36"ers than the 19.5's. You're right, I've never seen (haven't looked too hard though) any aggressive off roading/mud tires for the 19.5's. It seems those 19.5's are more for the highway and cruising minded, not the working type trucks.

I suppose I'll get flamed for that, but if you're mud bogging it to haul stuff out of, stick with the 36"ers, you'll be better off.

I'm ducking............... :

No need to duck...I really wish someone would come out with an agressive medium duty tire. The XML from michelin is "ok", but I'm not going to hack the fenders on a 37,000 dollar truck to get them to fit! On the F550s I've seen the "traction" type tires on it. Nothing major, nothing in any way self cleaning. So I'm just going to find a company to make the wheels(Stockton possibly) in 20" dia(less sidewall less flex less sway with trailer )And go to town pullin

Re:Lifts and tires

You probably don't want to use the IROK's; They're designed specifically to be a rock-crawling tire, and use an extremely soft compound. Their durometer is in the 40's, similar to a street-legal drag racing tire. Translation? You're gonna' wear those bad boys out in about 5000 miles!
I don't know how much experience you have with bias-ply tires; I've had the mixed blessing of owning and racing on lots of different sets (35"-44&quot over the years, and my best possible advice is to stay with radials. They ride, drive and handle much better, last a lot longer, don't "flat spot" when it's cold, and they're typically much quieter as well. Good luck with your project,
-Scott-

Re:Lifts and tires

Demon,

Have you considered the Interco TRXUS??

http://www.intercotire.com/html/trxus_mt___sts.htm

the Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip ??

http://www.desertrat.com/parnelli%20...nellijones.htm

the Nitto Mud Grappler??

Any one of these tires will last a lot longer than the Irock's

http://www.nittotire.com/tires_mudgrappler.asp

or Goodyear MTR??

http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyea...ea=Light+Truck

All mean looking tires that will likely give a lot more miles than the rock tires.

Re:Lifts and tires

Personally I plan on going with the 33x12.5x17 Interco TRXUS mud terrains when my BFGs wear out. They are 10 ply E rated and are nice and agressive looking.

Re:Lifts and tires

I like the Nitto Mud grappler. Looks agressive ;D Wish it'd come in a 35x12.50x17 though. I also like the Swamper TruXus MT + it comes in the right size. PJs don't come in a 17" rim other than a 265/70(31x10.50x17) :P

Yes they are nice for show tires, but never put em in the mud and I pray for you if you have to drive them in a down pour! The tread is very hard, which actually gives decent milage...the downside is NO traction. Mtr's are nice too, but a 285/70/17(33x11.50x17) is "only" $230 a piece. The 305/70/17(33x12.50x17) is only $242. The Swamper truxus MT is $212. But now here is something NICE. Swamper Irok RADIAL! 37x12.50x17 is $261 ;D ;D ;D Max load is 3640lb. I think I could live with a 4" lift, and just get the trailer jacked up and run 255/85/16s on it instead of 235/85/16s

I'd be suprised if I got 25,000 out of a set of any mud tires, much less IROKs. I need to find some bad 19.5" tires!
