K&N air intakes mistake

I got sucked into K&N hype and bought one of their "high flow intake kits". AFTER I bought it, I look at the dyno chart. Chart actually looses power quite a lot below 2000 rpm. Gosh where do I cruise? yep, just below 2000 RPM. Here I get something to try improving highway cruising performance/economy and if their dyno run is correct, I'm going to loose instead. Looks their chrt over carefully before you buy anything.

I think I'll leave it in the box and try to ebay it to someone that's as dumb or dumber than I was..

More important than dyno numbers is how much dust the K&N filters let pass into your engine...

You're better off replacing the filter itself with an AFE PG7 (I've had great oil sample results with these), AFE Dry filter, or an Amsoil dry filter...

I also wouldn't put too much emphasis on the dyno charts anyway. That's based on a WOT run. You're not cruising at full throttle.

Instead of spending tons of dough on another intake (I've had AFE stage 1 and stage 2 on my '03) I got a PSM cold air kit and an AFE PG7 drop-in for my '07.

My truck used to pull down the filter minder with the stock filter on stock fueling about 40%-50%. Now, even with the Smarty on 9, the filter minder doesn't move.

Not a very sexy setup, but it works extremely well...

On my last truck I had a stock K&N drop in filter and after 3k miles I pulled the intake tube after the filter and the inside was completely coated with a fine dust. I even used the sealing grease to go around the outside of the filter. I won't use K&N on anything I own ever again, and won't recommend one either. I have had way better oil samples with amsoil dry-flow and my new AFE dry-flow.

The run is just a factor of where each run was started. No power loss just the runs weren't consistently started at the same RPM so it shows a little shift.

The problem is just what JCleary stated and that is how much dust they let through. Much better off with a PG7 from AFE in my opinion.

I don't know if it is just user error, or what? But i use K&N on everything i have(fourwheelers trucks etc.) and i never have dust in my intake or oil on my turbo.......and ill definitely take my oiled filter over a dry one..... not getting on anyones case just sick of people giving crap to K&N....

I've had good luck with my K&N drop in also - just cleaned it a month ago and have taken it on a couple of week long camping trips in the dirt and the intake tube is still clean - no dust at all on it.

I hear you. I put a K&N in my 2008 Rhino. I use K&N's in everything I have but my Turbo Diesels. My first problem with one was on a 12 valve. I tried it again on my 24 valve dually. No more for me on these trucks.

there was a thread a couple of weeks ago in the 2nd gen section about a guy whose turbo sucked in pieces of his K&N filter, grenading his turbo.

Are the AFE Stage 1 intakes with the AFE Pro Guard 7 filter such as I have on my 03 suppose to be a performance and fuel mileage looser? I called AFE and asked questions about such and got a canned reply with a attitude of NO WAY,goodbye and leave us alone. When I bought my 03 there was lots of talk about how bad the factory set up flowed and now I get the impression its better then the Stage 1 system I bought back then.Thought about putting it back opinions please.

I would replace K&N filter with a Proguard 7.

For those looking, I am really happy with my Scotty III. Seemed to make a nice little difference.

At $100 for 03-04 and $150 for 04.5-06 I would go for it.

I had a K&N. I went 4-wheeling for a few hours. When I got home, I went to clean the filter. It was dusty inside the tube. Now I have an Amsoil. K&N filters are only good for driving inside big, plastic bubbles.

With your '03 the AFE is great. I had one on my '03. There's no shroud between the CAC and the headlight, so the filter gets fresh, cold air from the front of the truck. It sounds great, too!

How about on an '06? I orginally ordered a AFE Stage II and then decided that I wasn't going to install it. Scotty? Whistler? AFE? Workhorse? Certainly don't want to denegrate fuel mileage (or overall performance for that matter). Need something soon . . .
