Intake Decision, Help!
Intake Decision, Help!
I'm at a loss right now. I want to pick up an intake manifold but not sure which one to get. I've narrowed it down to the CFM+ and the GDP Power Flow. The GDP is like $100 cheaper, but I ain't heard much about it like I have the CFM+. Is it worth the extra $100? Thanks in advance!!
I have the CFM and it works just fine. Can't really tell a difference between the CFM and stock performance. I would highly suggest to save the maoney and go with something else. I don't see gauges in your sig, if so, that would be a very good investment. Lift pupms and a tranny fund are always good too
I have the GDP intake and am VERY PLEASED with it. It was easy to install. Someone here posted some information regarding it's flow/hp gain, not sure which post has the link. The additional ports are handy too, although the CFM has them as well.
I( decided to go with the GDP because of it's quality and also Richard is a great guy to do business with. Nothing like having the owner behind his parts. He also offers some paint choices, so if you are into details thats a nice way to go. The main reason I went with the GDP was because it was a metal part. Many are changing out the plastic intercooler pipe that goes from the manifold to the intercooler because it gives out with high boost. I changed mine out as well, not because I have increased boost over stock, it actually expands some with boost and that expansion can/will lead to a blowout of the pipe over time. I have experienced these plastic parts before on my turbocharged Miata and want no part of the issues they can cause.
The CFM unit is nice, but it is plastic and someone has already had trouble with it coming apart, no what you want to experience going down the road, you'll be dead on the side of the road.
As has been suggested, you DO need to consider gauges for your truck. It was the first thing I added to my truck regarding performance measuring, great tool for diagnostics and also monitoring EGT's. Since you also have a Smarty, gauges become very important, you DO need to keep an eye on things.

you can check our site for comparisons of the CFM/ATS/AFE and a later test of the GDP. The GDP actually made the second best power in our tests, so its a good deal for sure. The CFM is likely to work better on more modified trucks as it has higher volume, but that's an unscientific opinion.
We have tons of these things running on customer trucks making 65psi+ of boost, some with water/meth and or n2o with no issues. SO I am still waiting to see one explode and I don't think its going to happen. My $.02
The CFM that went boom wasn't done my another manufacturer. It was on a truck that saw no more than 60psi. I'm sure there may have been other factors involved though... heat, fatigue..etc.
I have nothing against the CFM as I had one myself and think it's a great product. IMO though, it does not belong on a truck that sprays anything or runs more than 50psi of boost. It's plastic !!!!
My opinion to the starter of this thread, put your money else where. No, intake will do anything for seat of the pants hp or spooling. There are 800+hp trucks out there using the stock intake without issue. That $400 can get some other cool parts.

Here is a lessor known option that is now available also. My truck picked up 14hp, same settings....same dyno........but different day, fwiw.
I can really feel the difference on the low end.

there are 2 mentions of a CFM+ failure on this forum (1 on a dyno with pictures and 1 recently from a truck pull while @60 psi) and several mentions on competitiondiesel. i have a buddy who runs one on a pretty heavily modded 2nd gen, so he called CFM to get their take on the failures and they referred him to this part of their warranty:
"This Intake is not intended for use in any competitive event or activities. This limited warranty is void where the Intake has been used in any of these ways."

When you do get a manifold, get a GDP if you want to mount the 2mk filter to it. The hellman manifolds look nice too. Erik at LCD had them all out on display, and I picked the GDP.
I just ordered the GDP manifold. The DTR store has a great deal on them!! I figure the pre tapped manifold will also help me when I install the boost gauge. It was a toss up for me between DTT and GDP. I was not going to pay more than $300 for mine which limited my choices.
I love my CFM+ intake and would buy another one. I saw a slight increase in boost pressure, slightly lower EGTs, and most importantly, faster turbo spool up. I noticed most of the difference in lower RPMs. Also the EGTs drop much faster.
Now, if you plan on running some serious boost pressure or NOS, then I would consider another intake. But, think of how many people that are running the CFMs without any problems at high boost. A lot of the same people haven't even replaced the stock plastic boost tube on the newer models. I don't know but maybe, maybe not.
