Cool Installing Cab Lights

Has anyone installed there own cab lights? I ordered a kit to install the lights since my 2500 didn't come with. I have heard I should run a bead of silicon around the gasket for extra protection. Anyone have a templet that I could use? Or any other things I should keep in mind? Also do I have to drop the headliner? If so how do I do it? Also where should I connect to the running lights? Sorry for all the Q's just don't want to screw this up plus it does invlove drilling into my new truck! Let me know if you have any pointers. I will try to take pics as I go and post a how-to when I am done.

Talking

I too have thought about installing clear cab lights. I talked to a guy from RECON ACCESSORIES and he of course said this was a easy install and truck already wired for it. Take the head liner down and plug it in. It is not hard to do, Just unscrew the A piller plastic. But go to recon accessories and check them out. Give them a call. If you don't think you can swing it take it to a body shop, they can do it. Let me know how it turns out.

I got the smoked ones from them. He told me the same that it was easy??? He also recommended not buying the 03-06 lights he said get the 2nd gen lights that they look very similar and that they seal better than the 3rd gen lights. So I orded them and will install them next week. Just trying to see if anyone else has done it.

I installed cab lights on my '00. I ordered the kit right from Dodge and it came with a template to use. As far as the use of silicone it would probably would not bea bad idea but i personally did not do this because of the foam rubber seal that goes under the light.
Dropping the headliner is as easy as unscrewing the a pillars and holding it out of the way you only need to drop it far enough so you do not hit it with your drill bit.

So how hard is it to wire up? Are there exsisting wires to hook to or do you have to home run to the light switch. I was thinking about ordering the LED light bar for the back with white light for back up lights. Sounds good any one have this set up?

How much was the kit from Dodge?
And does it plug into the factory harness with their kit? Or just splice it in yourself?

Ill probably order it here pretty soon....

I would try recon accessories dot com before I would buy from dodge. I talked to the guy from recon and he said that the new 03-06 lights tend to leak he recomended the 00 model lights. besides who wants standard amber lights like every other dodge, when you can have clear, smoked or bright white cab lights Let me know how it turns out. I would like to order some too but don't know how they would look on a 06 mega SRW 2500? what do you guys think?

I ordered the kit from dodge for my 05. They have not leaked yet. I think the kit was about 100$ and it came with a template, the install is not to bad after you get over drilling that first 7/8 inch hole in the roof of your new truck. I had a buddy helping me and he did the wiring, he spliced into the wires under the hood somewhere.

I have heard too many people having problems with the recon kits, too many leaks...
Havent heard of factory lights leaking at all.
Im not a big fan of the amber lights, but they still look good, dont leak and are functional all the same....

Ill see how much the factory kit is before considering recon.
I have heard the new kits they are putting out are supposed to be better about leaks(previous thread had a member that emailed the company)

I installed my mopar kit over the weekend. It was pretty easy. I removed the headliner and spent a good 30 minutes with a hose testing for leaks. I ran a bead of silicone around the outer edge of the foam, and had absolutely no leaks. My only complaint is the stupid plastic inserts for the screws. What a pain in the ***. I had to get long channel locks, and hold the stupid tabs from the inside, while screwing the light down from the outside. It wasn't that hard on the outside lights, but let me tell you about the middle light. . . .

I should have just screwed them straight into the roof. I'm also wondering how hard it's going to be to replace bulbs when they burn out (hopefully in many years).

Did you get a template with your factory kit I am trying to get someone to mail me there used one. I will pay postage!!! I have heard the Recon ones don't come with the template and since I am a little scared about drilling holes in my new truck I thought I would try to get one. Also is there a factory harness that you plug into or did you have to splice?

Well *****. I ripped it trying to get it off, and falling off the the truck at the same time. I crumpled it up, and tossed it in the recycle bin. I'm sure I could pull it out tonight and see if it's repairable / useable if you'd like?
