Install help on headstuds

Well ill be doing my twins/fuel system/ and studs in the next 2 or 3 days and i was wanting some last minute advice for doing the studs, what to torque them to, what pattern to put them in(im leaving my head on) and how many miles should i go before i retourque them, their haisley 12mm's if that matters. Thanks in advance, i just want to do it right the first time

Use ARP Moly lube on the studs. Torque the to 118 lb-ft. Once installed, warm the engine fully then pull everything off and retorque. Retorque again after 500 miles. You will have to grind a notch out of the back of the "rocker box" to clear the back, center stud. R&R the studs in the order listed in the service manual (start in the center and spiral out). The 6 longer studs go down the exhaust side.

where did you get the studs from... and what is a fair price?

Ps, wouldnt it be smart to go one for one... so the head stays seated?

No, you should be fine. The 500 miles thing is just a good check. For a new HG (and especially o-rings) I would say yes, but since you're just replacing, no.

Everything banshee said, just start in the middle and work you way out evenly in a criss cross pattern.

It is important to take your time on the head gasket, with all the boost and compression, it is one of the main problems people have.

On your first bolt start at about 60lbs the second to 60lbs, then torque them to 118lbs. You will pull the side of the head down and crease the gasket, if you start cranking on the first bolt.

Just keep the head as even as possible.

I have done some for trucks running 100psi, by doing two bolts at one time (me and a helper) going the same speed, same amount of turns, so it is perfectly mounted.

With studs and the stock gasket how much boost is safe to push?

That is a hard question. Depends on drive press, timing and boost actually. If you allow the motor to warm up fully and run a charger larger than stock( lower drive press) 55lbs is no problem. I ran up to 77 psi on my stock 00 headgasket with no problem for 2 years and the common rail mls gasket is better. Sometimes you get a head that is not flat though and they will blow much easier, luck of the draw. Tim
