I hope the Phat Shaft isn't beginning to bite the Phat one.

I hope the Phat Shaft isn't beginning to bite the Phat one.

Its a PS 62/14 with a TST late twins/Mp-8 stack. Its just started about maybe a month ago.

It will make 40psi, and the needle starts to fluctuate really fast, and the noise its making....well I can't really describe. Almost like a flutering/exhaust leak natured type noise....but I don't see any soot on the manifold or the housing itself.

It doesn't start making the noises until about 20psi and above.

It used to hit 45-50psi, and then settle in at 40psi. Now it gets to about 39-40psi, and flucuates between 38-40psi reallly reallly fast. The wastegate hasn't been touched since getting the turbo from Industrial Injection.

The noise is coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment....almost like its the turbo itself.

I have checked the intercooler clamps..........they are darn tight. All of the exhaust housing/elbow clamps are tight, the turbo mounting bolts are tight.

Shaft play is ever so slight, spins freely, doesn't hit the housing or anything.

What gives????

But from what???

Its been on the truck for almost 40K miles, and Mp-8 was added back in January.

Keep the ideas coming!!!

Well I just got back from swapping the turbo-to-intercooler pipe and its boots.

Its still there.....

Thinking back now, this all started after changing the fuel filter with the new 7 micron Fleetguard filter. Could the fuel filter being a 7 micron instead of the old 10 be causing the rail to run dry, and that's what I am hearing through the open wastegate????

Only thing with that idea, is that it does it with the TST and Mp-8 turned off also.

Even from your original statements, it still sounds like the turbo. Practically anything else will leave codes. If you hear strange sounds from the turbo, its probably the turbo. This is from experience. I only wish to save you time, and hopefully money.

I'm gonna call Shane at Industrial tomorrow and what his take on it is.

35K miles and the turbo is shot??? I won't be a happy camper thats for sure.

It sounds like compressor surge to me as well. Is it only at lower RPM's or throughout the RPM range? Some obstruction between the turbo and intake horn?

I don't know why it would start doing it now, but from your description it doesn't sound like the turbo is bad. No in/out play?

only at WOT....the entire rpm range over 20 psi....runs to 40psi and does it.

Maybe your wastegate diaphram has some wear and is letting the wastegate open up prematurely.

Doesnt sound like the typical turbo failure.

If you get any "in/out" play then the thrust is worn.

Pull of the intake tube and check for shaft play and or compressor rub to account for low boost.

If not...it is your wastegate...like Pourin' said.

There is some up/down play, no in/out play. No rub, spins freely.

Thanks for the responses!!!!
