Howdy

whats up guys. i am in the market for a new truck. having owned an 03 and now owning an 05 1500 im ready to move up to a 2500-3500 cumins. im looking for a quad cab short box 4x4. im still undecided on a 6 speed or an auto. i like the big rig affect of the 6 speed however. the auto would be faster and is probably more suited to me, but the 6 speed seems fun, and cheaper too. my question is.....

if i get the auto...what programmer, or how many extra horsepower and ft lbs can i put through the tranny daily and still not affect its longevity. what about the manual? i wil eventually be sporting 4.5 inches of lift and 36s. within the next year i will be picking up an 18-22 foot center consol fishing boat. thanks guys!

id like to run a programmer but i want it to be reliable. i dont need insane amounts of power...just better then stock. i will run dual 5 inch stacks and intake. if even a low power programmer will toast the auto much faster then should be, ill get the 6speed. any opinions.

First off Welcome to DTR!

It sounds like the auto is more up your alley from your description of use. I have not personally ever owned an auto (well except for the one and only bowtie I owned but that's a whole nuther thread). I have had great success with the 3 dodge ctd 5&6 speeds I have owned (91.5,98.5,04.5). Do a search on the auto's and I think that you will find that most would recommend some billet parts with any kind of power add, but then again there is alot of people that take the "run it till it blows" approach too.

Happy reading,
T398

Ha Ha!!! Just kidding Joey!!

You will find that if you get an auto, they shift differently than the autos in your typical gas engines. I can't seem to get happy with mine although everybody tells me it's normal. Sometimes they seem to shift too quickly and sometimes they seem to take too long before shifting. I even have a built trans and something in the computer keeps it from shifting optimally for me. It has, on the other hand, been a very reliable trans even before I got Tim to build it for me. If you want to get a power adder then you really should get at least a better converter and valve body to start.
I want a new dually 6 speed but I have so many mods on this truck that are not easily pulled off that I would lose my shirt trading it in or selling it. Who knows, I may take it back to Tim and pay him to pull the good stuff off, Turbo, injectors, and trans internals, and put them back to stock. Then I can sell some of it and put some of it on the new truck. My wife would kill me but at the same time it's gotten to the point where I have had to spend some money keeping it on the road(brakes, axle seals, a couple other minor things) and even she told me it's time for a new truck!!

thanks all.i did do some searching around....didnt want to look like a complete idiot. i read a few posts where people were saying on an auto, if your running 36s or 37s with a programmer you btter have had saved up some money for vb and tc or a tranny. the things that are priorities on my trck are lift tires and exhaust. a programmer will come to follow. although i dont NEED a manual, it is cheaper. i know its not nearly as fast, but its gotta be faster then the 1500 4.7 i have now. i dont mind shifting at all. anyhow, i app yalls opinoins....and dodgezilla...wen you heading back down here to va beach. we need to get some hot wings and cold beer! i owe ya still for delivering those tires
