how to tell if the rail pressure relief valve is damaged
for the last few months i've had a bully dog downloader on extreme stacked with an Edge EZ on the 2nd setting. Ran real good but for whatever reason the EGTs only hit 1200 degrees pre-turbo maybe once and that was on an extended top speed run. And the last few weeks it hasn't been feeling quite as strong...don't know if I'm just used to it or if maybe the rail pressure relief valve is sticking open. Anyways...what are some other symptoms of this and what should I look for under the hood to see if this is the case or not.
The only sure way is to put a flow meter in the return line coming off the rail overpressure valve and then put the truck under load and watch the return flow. There should be very little, even at WOT.
You can also watch the FCA duty cycle and rail pressure via a scan tool.
Someone needs to write a FAQ about all this stuff.

There are lots of posts about hard to start, smoke at idle, low power and poor fuel economy. All these problems are related to the lift pump/CP3/rail overpressure relief valve and injectors. The 3rd gen engines are easy to work on and easy to diagnose things. Seems the same issues appear over and over again.

Don't thinks so because this has to due with the fuel after it leaves the cp3....Not before it. I believe it is the fuel that goes to the injectors along the rails...but don't know. I have been wrong before..

Someone else can write this stuff up. I spend WAY too much time on this stuff. Just go through the posts and make a FAQ. Just like was done for the killer dowel pin on the earlier engines.
