How to Really Control Boost? Is there a way!?

Hey all...

I'm changing some things around on my truck and getting ready to do my next batch of mods.

What I'm wondering is...

Is there anyway to control how much boost the turbo is truly allowed to make.

What I want is basically a true boost controller that I can set at any given boost level and the truck will control it to that point.

I want it to control the boost level no matter what tuner or stack I am using at the time.

Or am I just wasting effort and should get a boost fooler and just let the turbo do what it wants?

Thanx for any help you all can provide.

With a wastegate controlled boost controller you should be able to. I know it works on turbo cars. Not sure how it works with the electronically controlled wastegates we have, but I bet you could make one work.

Since I don't see an aftermarket turbo on your truck...then 40psi maximum is your maximum. The TST you have can control the boost to 35 to 40 psi. ks

Warlord what are you trying to accomplish, a boost fooler will allow you to boost higher without throwing a code, but you can't controll boost with it.

You can boost 45 with your turbo now, probably not for a real long time, but there are a few people doin it.

A boost controller basically just opens the wastegate at a predetermined level and only allows boost to reach the level that you have set.

Still be carefull with the tst, even with mine capped at 38 I have seen much higher, and this was with out the mp8 on the truck. I guess the tt03 dumps so much fuel in it creats the boost even after the cap is hit.

I am installing a true boost controller in my truck. When it is finished (probably in the next 2 weeks) I will gladly let you know what was needed in order to make it work.

There are two ways to control boost...bleed off air to keep the boost from going over a limit or reducing fuel to keep the boost down....Bleeding off the air will cause turbos to stop spooling. I like the TST method because....yes it does allow momentary peaks in boost...which don't hurt anything, but it defuels so smoothly you can drive at the limit. ks

There are ways to control the electronic wastegates on a stock turbo. As of right now I do not know of any that are commercially available at this time.

Basically the wastegate is an electronic solenoid. To control it you need to know boost pressure and have electronics modulating the solenoid to keep boost at the desired level. On the newer trucks it is not just a matter of more or less air getting to the wastegate. The ECM controls the wastegate and knows what the boost is or what it is being told it is and it makes adjustments accordingly.

Now if you have an aftermarket turbo there may be many ways to control the boost, both mechanical and even some electronics dependant on the turbo.

The big questions is if this sort of feature was built in to a module or a stand alone module would it really be worth the price. It would not be too cheap it would be reasonably complex. I think the answer is no, its not worth it at least in any quantity that matters.

Unless you do something really crazy the stock turbo will live a long life even in the low 40 psi range. As long as you don't bark it or throw so much fuel at it that you just flat snap the shaft it works very well so why try to keep it at 35 or 38 psi?

If you have serious amounts of fuel then you need a new turbo. If you try to get away with the stock turbo with insane amounts of fuel then you are playing with fire. Everyone knows this but for some reason they think they or everyone they tell has the self control to keep their TST at level 3/2 or something. That is how most of them get broken.

This is something that I to have been thinking about the last few days. My problem is that the stock turbo will build 40+ psi even with a line run from the intake to the waste gate actuator! I cant stop it from this. I am assuming that the waste gate is opening all the way, but the BD Ram X is just capable of fueling enough so that the waste gate doesnt do squatt? I cant figure out how to control it any more unless I go to a controlled bleed off valve like we run on the Macks?

Actually the wastegate is just staying close all the time. It does this not because of fueling but because of what the X Power is telling the ECM.

In the world of electronic wastegates you have 2 simple options. DO nothing and let the ECM handle it and you are stuck at 32psi. Or do some fooling and then the wastegate is basically kept closed.

Any options further than that will require additional electronics and logic.

OK.. That makes more sense..

Basically the reason I wanted to be able to adjust a maximum boost level was just for my own learning... I wanted to see what different fueling vs. different allowable boost would do.

My only problem with using the TST to limit boost is it won't limit boost added by the fueling from another box. It will only defuel it self.. Which of course is really all that can be asked of it. It doesn't know what the other tuner is doing so it doesn't know how to defuel.

The other thing I don't like about the TST is that just by plugging it into the trucks harness it will allow the truck an extra 5 PSI of boost with all of the settings set to 0/0 and boost limiter on.

D.Wiggs - Definately let me know what you find out.. but at this point it sounds like this project is going to be more expensive than it is worth.

Qzilla - I'll definately be getting ahold of you about a boost fooler.

Everybody Else.. I appreciate the input. I definately have a little better understanding of why nothing like this exists on the market.

Thanx Again!

On our electronic wastegates there is still what appears to be a vaccum line that runs to the wastegate, from the solenoid. How does this solenoid accuate the wastegate, does it produce its own vaccum or pressure I gues it would be??

But what accuates the wastegate?

The ECM.

The ECM recieves a Boost signal. It then make a decision if it is too high or not. IF it is too high then it modulated the electronics solenoid to open once it opens and bleeds boost off and boost is in check then it may close it or even keep it slightly open.
