how many auto clutches in an 03 HO 48re?

i was wondering how many clutches can be put in the 48re. i was reading a post that you can put 1 more in than from the factory is this correct? or is it only on the 47? how many actually go in there? any help would be greatly appreciated, as i plan on rebuilding my own trans input output tc clutches and bands thanks

Four clutches is OEM, with the correct parts you can add 1 more.

1st gear is 4 from the factory, but can be modified to hold 5. It takes some lathe work. Not something alot of people can do on their own.

2nd gear is a band.

3rd gear only has 4 from the factory. It can be built to hold 6 with realitive ease. Just use different clutch and steal sizes until you get it. A heavily modded tranny can hold as many as 7-8 3rd gear clutches.

OD holds 5 or 6 clutches. Seen both. Can be made to hold 6 if it only has 5.

OD direct holds 9 clutches.

Most increase in clutch numbers mean that the thick plate on the end has been turned down on a lathe to allow for another set of clutches and steals. This isn't something everyone has access to. It also means the builder needs access to an assortment of clutch and steal sizes, along with different size large snap rings. All of these things set at the correct tolerances.

The stock #'s should be good as long as you are using upgraded clutches like Raybestos high energy or something like that.

You should be able to get another clutch in 3rd gear fairly easy. You just need to get some smaller clutches and steals.

Don't forget to get some VB work done. Nothing will hold without some added pressure.
