How to increase performance

I have a California 2003 CTD Truck. Stock is 235 Hp vs normal 250 hp.

I want to increase the performance of the engine but nothing crazy like 1/4 mile racing.

What would be the best logical steps to do this. I can't afford to do it all at once but more in steps. Is it best to start with air intake, exhaust, chips, etc. Not to open a big can of worms but what is the best chip for the job? Everyone seems to be going with the Edge EZ?

Also, what are the long term affects on the truck by charging up the engine?

I am not getting great mileage either. I am bringing it in to the dealer to check the injectors and pump. I can only get about 14-15 with combined city/freeway and not putting my foot into it at all.

Any suggestions would be great. This forum has been awesome so far.

thanks,
Don

I'd do gauges, exhaust, intake, fueling box of your choice (I like the EZ).

Same as above-except I like my six-gun better than my old edge.

More power down low.

Install the Banks Six Gun w/Speed Loader. That's the ticket, it may cost more but I think it's worth it. I'm running it on my 235hp Cali truck and the power is nice. I only run it on 2-3 and I just love it. I'm not a racer so I won't even think about using it on 4-6.

Start with Banks Monster exhaust. This exhaust comes with a true 4" DP that connects directly to the turbo and eliminates the cast elbow that necks down from 4" to 3.5". This really helps the exhaust flow smoothly out of the turbo. Also the muffler is one of the more restrictive areas and Banks new muffler incorporates an expansion chamber to avoid any exhaust drone.

Next you need a good air intake such as the Scotty RA-III with new 2-stage foam air filter element. These intakes get air from the stock fender location as well as ram air from the front of the truck. The foam air filter stops more dirt than gauze filters while maintaining great air flow.

You will also want a Turbo Air Guide (TAG) to help direct the air flow into the turbo for quicker spool ups and better fuel economy with less smoke.

Next its gauges like the Di-Pricol which were made spefically to match the new Dodge dash and a chip. Banks Six-Gun with the latest programming works very well and we have seen small mileage increases using it here in the shop on a 2004 truck.

Guys,

So far great info

With the CA truck will just doing the exhaust cause the Engine light to come on? I thought the CA trucks had cats on them to meet CA emissions?

Anyone know what power increases you would have with just the exhaust and air intake?

Thanks again and great helpful info

Donwon, thought of something else last night: try this. Disconnect both batteries, turn ignition to "on", leave it that way for about 30 minutes. Turn ignition off, reconnect batteries. Turn ignition "on" but do not start. Slowly press the accelerator to the floor, hold it momentarily, then ease up and let off completely, then turn the ignition "off". Now start the truck. If anything, now your computer will know the range of your gas pedal. Helped mine a little, hey, its a freebie!

range of pedal? either that is a really smart computer, or a really dumb computer... depends on how you look at it.
