Question how heavy should i build this tranny while its out?

Well my tranny Blew this past weekend. the input shaft exploded and managed to. Basically make the torque converter near impossible to remove. After the shop got it off it was no longer able to be used for core. Basically its around 6100 or so to get full rebuild, billet input, single disk converter, billet flexplate, and hardened case. This is a notorious houston shop and I trust them. My question is should I spring for the triple disk, and billet output? Maybe even valve body too? Money is tight, but I know it will cost me double to upgrade this later. I know ill might be ok without the upgrades. But its hard to think about paying more than double to go back abdominal upgrade these at a later date...

The triple disk TC will be the better route. You might as well get it done right the first time.

ya he said the billet output was good but not necessary... basically if you can spring for it then do it.... this is gonna be an 8000.00 tranny all said and done, lol well nothing like taking out a small mortgage to get this tranny going

Man, I'd do everything you can afford right now.

I'd call around first to another few tranny places. You might be able to get a better deal from a reputable dealer.

If you're planning to go more power (says so in your sig) I would not go anything less than a billet/laminated flexplate, triple disk TC, VB, Billet input, billet output. I had an ATS stage 4 (no output) and sheared it off the first time I made a run with my turbo.

Skimp now, pay later.

I discused this very thing with Gorend Bro's when I was doing my tranny. He said to go with the laminated flex plate, tripple disc, & billet input, but not the output. His reasoning was that with the billet output you may end up breaking the intermediate shaft which will grenade the gear, but with a stock output that becomes the weak link, & is easy to replace. Not cheap, but way cheaper than a new gear.

ive heard this too, how hard is it to break the output shaft? just as easy as the input shaft?

im gonna talk to him today about going with triple disk and discuss a billet output possibly. what do you guys think about a valve body?

ok well talked to my tranny guy. the valve body, billet flexplate, billet input, hardened pan, heavy duty rebuild are all included with the low end. i just went ahead and added the billet output and triple disk.... about 7300-7400 otd... why not right? just money i dont have, lol... anyways he said with the addition of triple disk, he will do some slight mods to the VB to get the pressure up. said hes has yet to see a intermediate break on one of his rebuilds... I went ahead with the billet output, as was told by Hotrod that the stock one is pretty weak.

I have heard a lot of that with the billet output vs stock, but I rarely hear of a gernaded intermediate, and as quick as I broke my stocker?

If it was a 2wd, I would leave a stock output in it.

forgive my ignorance here, but $7300-7400 seems really high - Dave Gorend's website shows a fully built 48RE for $3750. Is there that much labor involved in a trans swap? I'm asking, because I'm planning on swapping mine out in a year or so.

per goerend:
48RE (2004-2007) transmission Click here for details $3750.00
1 piece Sonnax Billet input shaft $750.00
Upgrade Output Shaft--Billet $750.00
Triple Disc Torque Converter 100,000 Mile Warranty $1050.00
High Pressure Valve Body with solenoids $670.00
Billet Flex Plate $450.00
-7420.00 just for the tranny and parts... this does not include these items for my specific case:
converter core charge: 300.00 (since my converter is completely trashed)
hardened pan w drain plugs: 250.00
this would put you at 7970.00 this does not include labor. i might be missing something with the numbers, if so sorry

i dont have any issues with these guys, 7400.00 seems reasonable for what im getting, not to mention i am in need of my daily driver back and Hotrod diesel took me in immediately and threw me at the top of the list ahead of a months backlog since it was an emergency and i need it turned around asap.

I checked his website again and it shows that for the $3750, the triple disk converter and upgraded valve body is included. That's $1720 of the extras you listed above. Hopefuly thats right. Hate for you to spend more than you need to. These things are spendy.

i gotcha that sounded high the way i calculated it out. but no i definately do not feel im spending more than anyone else for the same transmission and parts.

48RE (2004-2007) transmission Click here for details $3750.00
1 piece Sonnax Billet input shaft $750.00
Upgrade Output Shaft--Billet $750.00
Billet Flex Plate $450.00
-5700.00 just for the tranny and parts... this does not include these items for my specific case:
converter core charge: 300.00 (since my converter is completely trashed)
hardened pan w drain plugs: 250.00
-6250.00 this does not include any tax/shipping if they even charge for this which i doubt they dont charge shipping.
so im paying about 1100.00 for labor which sounds about right. not to mention the number of +800hp trucks running around houston with this guys transmission in them

What kind of warranty?? I'd do the same thing you're doing, alot less hassle and they're local, so if any probs you can go right back.......
