Hood Air deflector, Look or Function

Do those chrome air deflectors that mount to the front of the hood actually do anything or are they for looks. I waxed the truck yesterday and noticed some small chips in my hood. If these things work I may have to get one.

Thanks
John

I have one and don't think it does much if anything.

I've got 170K on mine and only have 1 chip on the side of the hood right where it joins the fender. Theres no question that the hood shield protects the hood. Anyone who has driven I 80 through Nevada in the winter can attest to that.

I just noticed Blue600 is in NV! Do you have any chips in your hood or have you not ventured east?

I have one, but I took it off. It was creating a whisling noise around the base of my windshield. Apparently some thin foam tape along the bottem of the hood deflector will get rid of the noise. I haven't tried this yet.

I have had them on every one of my trucks. Helps out with the hood chips & sand from the road roughing up the windshield . But I think it's most effective with reducing bug splatter . It can get pretty nasty up here in late spring and summer
