Highest flowing filter

Hey guys, I noticed a little oil in the charged air elbow on my turbo. I spoke with Nathan today and he said that it might be from a filter that does not flow well enough and causes a vacume which pulls some oil past the seal. So does anyone know what the best flowing filter is. Or one that flows better than the AIMSOIL filter that I have now?

Thanks Joel

Are you talking about a drop in replacement for the stock air box?

I use an AFE filter on mine, but it replaces the whole air box, etc. Its louder than a stock air box.

Im looking for something that will flow better than the aimsoil 6 inch filter that im using now. Something like the replacement filter for the AFE stage 2 kit.

S&B had a company do flow tests with ISO 5011 flow test benches. They are rumored to be "unbiased" but the S&B results are always exactly the same, as are the OE, and S&B always wins overall. AMSOIL was actually one of the worst flows worse even than stock, but i think it was one of the best filtration.
there was a post on here not long ago about this. I'm sure you can search for it, it was purty popular. Or you can find the unbiased, non-tampered-with, non-advertisingwebsite here http://www.thetruthaboutfilters.com

I've always had good luck out of the AFE filters. You should be fine with that.

I had a 6" x 11"(about that size) cone amsoil and had it collapse at 17 psi boost. I just cleaned it about 2000 miles before. I went back to the BHAF, I think it flows really well.

I think its gona be hard to be an AFE prodry S for the stage 2 intakes. The PG7 should filter slighty better but IMO the prodry flows pretty well.

I have both, and run both and cant tell a diff, but they do flow enough for me.

According to Dieselplace high $ test, K&N flowed the best at the cost of poorer filtration. I don't think you can have your high flow without giving up some filtration regardless of which filter you go with.

So to answer, any oiled filter will flow more, K&N being the most flow with poorest filtration.

i just bought a AFE for 56 dollars and it has to be 2 times the area of my old filter in my volant box. I had to cut the volant apart, but my truck is way better now. Ill dig up the filter number, but its 6" inlet, 9" round and 9" base. It also has the open cone front for more airfolw. I noticed abig difference over the volant filter which colapesed with the stock turbo. This one hasent collapsed up to 45 psi yet.

Correct me if I am wrong, but looking at S&B test videos and the results graph afterwards it would appear that they refer to a filter as AFE filter that looks more like a AEM filter.

If this is so it shows problems with their ad. Infomercials broadcasting, be it TV or internet, always show things in their favor. Like Banks says they are the best or Hypertech or Edge or Superchips. Sadly the only true testers are few or the school of hard knocks testing club (the consumer) gets it done, which is costly.

I use an AFE drop in right now. I have used AFE, K&N, AEM, and others they all seem the same to me, but I don't have a high dollar testing lab. The latest filter I got was farmland tested and seem to keep the dirt out.

As for CAI systems vs drop in, those that have used both say they get the same results on the dyno. I would be nice to have truly independent study with results posted by that lab so no opinions are added. Just Facts.

Peace

The oil gets pulled past the turbo seals. The engine oil pressure is generally greater than the boost pressure under most conditions and for the most part the seals can handle this pressure differential. However, if you have a restrictive air filter and combine it especially with a fast spooling turbo(s), you can pull a pretty good vacuum at the turbo inlet that makes the pressure differential inside the turbo larger.

When I had BD twins I had the same problem. They supply a pretty small AFE PG7 filter and I was constantly getting oil in the intercooler tube. I actually sent the turbos off to get rebuilt by HTT and they returned them saying everything was in 100% good condition.

I then tried a lot bigger AMSOIL nanofiber filter thinking that it would flow a lot more and the oil in the intake actually got worse. However, the silicon in the oil analyses improved almost an order of magnitude.

With the MPI twins I still see some oil in the intake, but it is very minor compared to the BD twins. MPI also provides an AFE filter that is almost 50% bigger than the filter that BD provided.

The way you get higher flow and still maintane your filtration is by increasing the surface area.
