So last week I started up my truck, left the house, and was about 1/4 of a mile from home and my truck would erratically pop clouds of black smoke and the engine would rev up to 2000, go down to a 1000, go up to 2000, go down to 1000, etc. all with me not even touching the gas pedal. I was able to shut it down. Initially it wouldn't start and then after 5 minutes it started back up and ran fine.

I turned around and went back home but before I made it the truck just died while going about 40 mph. I pulled over and it wouldn't start for good this time so I had to get it towed to the shop.

The mechanic said that it was the Quadzilla causing the problems. He disconnected it, it wasn't popping any codes, test drove it, and it has ran just fine since.

I was wondering what might have caused it? Anyone have any clue?

I would really like to hook it back up because the box DOES WORK. It has increased my mpg almost 2 mpg (hand calculated, not looking at the lie-o-meter). Should I try re-hooking it up?

I would think something went bad inside the quad box

 

Hook it up to see if it truck acts up. Then you'll be pretty certain it's the box. Then you might want to contact Quad, probably send them the box and figure out what might have happened.

 

Had same problem with mine on 2nd gen truck I owned sent it back got a new one.
