Help -- Confusion on Chipping

All,

I am fairly new to posting on this forum, I read a lot, just don’t post much.

Here is my current situation. I use my totally stock 04 dodge dully 6sp QC as a daily driver (no towing). On occasion I do tow my 05 sandpiper 5er. Total weight GCVW is 17.2k. Overall the truck does great pulling it, can’t say the same for stopping it. I plan on installing a pacbrake to solve that problem. Now here is the problem, my wife and I are in the process of kicking around the idea of a toy hauler, namely a 41ft KZ Inferno 4012, I figure the totally weight will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 23k total. To do this I would like to get a little more out of the engine. Currently I have the 305/555 engine. I know I need gauges planning on an EGT and boost. Now here is the question which tuner to buy, the more I read the more I am confused. I am pretty sure (unless someone can change my mind) that I DO NOT want a fueler chip, but past that I am very confused. I am very interested in the PROs and CONs of each chip, smarty, edge ez, bully dog.

Also to add to this, will any of the chips work on biodiesel? I do under stand that between b0 and b100 there is about an 18k btu loose, resulting in lose of overall power.

Please keep in mind that I want to tow better…though I do get a kick out of seeing a vette get its back side burned by a 7k lb race truck.

Please offer suggestions….
Confused (Bryan)

Well I am sure you will hear smarty a lot, but I say for the year of truck the diablo predator is awesome. It comes with 3 tunes, one for towing, one for not towing as much and one for fun. All that for under 400 bucks. I love mine.

My biggest concern would not be a chip it would be a clutch!!! Towing that much weight your only living on borrowed time... I am a huge fan of smarty..... But to each is his own... I got 44k out of my stock tranny towing 19k every day...

I agree with the clutch, but as far as power goes, DO NOT let anyone talk you into a downloader that you cannot adjust on the fly. Get the Juice or a Quad product that you can adjust by simply tapping a button if needed.

Shane where did you put in a clutch.................

I agree with OMAHA,.........................................but

BEFORE ANY CHIP YOU NEED GAUGES.

The that thing I like about the EDGE JUICE w/ATTITUDE, you get 14 different perameters to choose from, monitoring up to 4 all in 1 unit.

It really depends how far you want to go with the truck, or should I say how much $$$ you want to spend

Bryan, sir you went from towing a Sandpiper to towing a toy hauler to racing a vette in one post.

1. Get a Quad Commander for gauges, It lets you set limits to prevent damage( by defueling.).
2. get a clutch
3. get a fuel system cheaper than you think for a do it yourself Walbro.
4. Get a smarty. yes it is a downloader but you will not be racing a vette while towing a toy hauler.
5. mod you air box.
6. lots of exhaust system to chose from.

At that point you are over 400 hp.

5. lots of exhaust system to chose from, or a stack(s)
6. get a clutch.
7. Whatever $ you have left.......................

Now you are over 450 hp.

Fixed it for you

And will still be towing with stock power because with the stock turbo he may encounter high egts on a hill with that heavy of a load and a non-adjustable programmer does him no good at that point. You got the Quad Commander part right with the safety limits, but it has to be hooked up to a Quad box to take advantage of those features. That's why I said Quad or Edge.

This is the order I did my mods in, not saying it's right, but...

gauges
cold air intake
exhaust (Nelson muffler)
programmer
exhaust brake
next will be fuel system.

For you I would definitely get gauges first though before any chip or programmer. The clutch can wait til it starts to go, mine has never slipped but I know it will if I try to run Crazy Larry.

Id go with just a quad std box with the commander gauge system and a pacbrake and a ****** whistler air intake. I never had any egt problems with my edge module but the quad box is a much better bang for the buck. And it would stack with the smarty where the edge wont, that is if you ever decided to destroy a set of tires or something. $2000-2200 total

As long as you dont romp on it act like I do that should work pretty good for you and if the clutch starts to give you'll know, order a South Bend Con FE single disc clutch for another $1100 bucks.

I would get an edge ez BOX since you pull all that weight and you wouldnt have to buy a clutch and all that. you would just need to get a set of gauges then
