help on 48re trans

Hello i need some advice, i have a 48re trans with a banks torque converter in it. I had the trans rebuilt by the dealer because it was flaring up about 300 to 400 rpm on lockup in 4th gear. Also it was not shifting correctly from 2nd to 3rd. Anyway it has about 4000 miles on it since the rebulid and the torque converter was installed. I need to do something to the valve body or replace it. I am not sure what to do and need advice please. I am unhappy with the shifting and lockup, it is soft and still flars up on lockup. Can any on give me advice on what they have done that works. I'm looking to add better preformance out of the transmission. Thank you

I just put in a heavy duty (not triple disk) TC, valve body and intermediate band. No more slipping in lockup. Did you get a heavy duty TC or just a regular one? It sounds like you definately need a VB and a little more oil pressure. At least you can do the VB without pulling the tranny, but whoever did the work should have known better than to only do half of what you needed. Get a VB or have yours modified. And find out if your new TC is heavy duty or not.

Oh, just noticed you said it was a triple disk. Hmmm. How could that be slipping? How much power are you making?

48re problem

Hello it is a heavy duty banks triple lock torque converter. And i am getting a flare up before it locks up the torque converter. I am making about 425hp and about 850 foot lb. at the wheel. I had the pressure in the valve body turned up but it still needs a firmer shift and better performance. It is running about 170 degees. Thank you

A flair before locking is different than not holding the power. It's just a programming and lockup speed situation. I was told that it won't go away completely, but it will be better with larger oil ports in the VB that allow a quicker lockup. It seems the 48RE wants to go into 4th and lockup, at certain speeds and power levels, as one long shift. Seems weird and bothered me too. Now mine is better with the new VB. Firmer, but the same sort of extended double shift. These trannys are really becoming outdated. They can be made really tough, but it's time for something more modern with a couple more speeds. It's basically just an old 727 TorqueFlite from the '60s with an OD and lockup converter added on. Bring on the Aisin!

The common ones are ATS, DTT, HTT, Suncoast,...you might also look at a controller to set lockup speeds,....i know ATS and DTT both offer, assume the others would as well.....do a search on any of the above, you get 3 days of reading....

I plan on going DTT becasue there's a top notch DTT Recommended installer within 10 miles of my house....

Most reputable trans builders wont even sell / install just a TC becasue it'll never be successful by itself....supprised banks does....
