head studs
The head is held on from the factory by bolts that thread into the block through the top of the head. Head studs replace the bolts. They are threaded on both ends and thread into the block and the then a nut is applied to the top threads to hold the head in place. This gives better clamping force and they are made of stronger material as well. The purpose is to eliminate the factory bolts from stretching under high cylinder pressure causing the head gasket to blow.
