GDP Kit question

I finally instaled my 392 performace kit last night. It wasnt that hard but I hope I never have to do it again. Not that the kit isnt good, its not Rich's fault at all, its just the process of droppin the tank and all kinda sucked.

Anyway, I was wonderin how much fluctuation you guys are seeing?

When I was drivin home I could hit the brakes hard and it would drop from 20-21 psi to 10-15, I believe this is because I had 1/8th of a tank or less. I put in 8 gallons last night ( almost 1 am) and I will fill it up today and see how it does but even after that the pressure just didnt seem quite right.

Some times it would idle at 18-19 then other time 20-21. I did not order any shims or spings for it, its just the standard 392 set at what ever psi it comes with. I also had a leak goin out of the pump that I THINK we fixed. I will go over it again today and make sure.

Sorry for the long post but I need all the help I can get.
Thanks

I notice differences in psi only with the tempereature of the fuel. When it's cold out and I start her up, fuel pressure is 5-6psi higher than if the truck has been running for an hour of so. I have no way to check what it does upon stopping because my gauge is under the hood on the OEM filter canister!!

I guess I should mention, I used the T in Rich's kit and put it between the cp3 and his 2MK filter, so that is where I am gettin my pressure at.

Thanks for the info Supa

from what I've read, those are normal ranges to see. His kit comes set at 22psi.
I'll be installing my FP gauge today and I don't plan on change the shims until I need more pressure. The norm seems to be between 20 and 30psi for stock

Dropping the tank???????? I did my install yesterday, and did not drop the tank. Took me about 2 1/2 hours or so. Very pleased. Seeing 20 PSI. Why did you drop the tank?

Well, climbed back under the truck and it is still leakin fuel but it is at a differant spot. The one I took loose and retightened with some rector seal is not leaking. However just about every other conection is leaking. I got to run to mississippi later this afternoon but I guess I will try and get it fixed Monday after work.

Any hints on how to get this thing to not leak?

You didn't use clamps on the pushlock barbs did you? That can cause them to leak. I had to use a little rubber hose lube and A LOT of force to get the hose all the way onto the barb and up against the little yellow disk. If you got the hose all the way on and you didn't use hose clamps, it shouldn't be leaking.
For what it's worth, I would get the tuning kit. I used the heavy spring and two shims and am seeing about 35psi. It only takes a couple minutes to change. I also did the big line kit which is a pretty quick and easy install.

I had to use ss hose clamps on the pushlock barb fittings(even w/ the hose pushed completely to the ring it leaked). No problems now. I used very small hose clamps, maybe a 1/4" wide.

FYI, Slight correction....it is 05 and up trucks that have the in-tank pump and need the new pickup line. The 03-04.5 trucks still have the filter mounted lift pump unless they have been to the dealer for the conversion due to a bad LP.

ditto. use a bunch of force to get the tube all the way to the yellow...no clamps. use some lube as well. Only ever had 1 small leak in mine...and fixed it quickly.

My truck fluctuated psi for the first couple of days before steadying out.

its always a good idea to not run less than 1/2 tank in your truck. This is so the Walbro isn't starving for fuel.....not to mention you will have cooler diesel with less air. As diesel returns to the tank, in effect its heated. If you only have 1/8 of a tank, the fuel will be much warmer which won't burn as well. Also, notice the baffling in the middle of the tank. everytime diesel slushes past it, it gets foamy with air. this ofcourse isn't good either and at times like this is the only time I can hear my Walbro.

I don't see a GDP kit in your sig. I had to drop the tank on my 04.5. Don't know how else you could possibly follow the instructions. If you deviate from the instructions it could probably be done, but with something like this, I decided to follow the instructions. In order to get the feed line disconnected from the top of the tank and in order to cut the fill tube and install the return line, the tank had to come down. I had originally understood that the tank did not need to come down and thus had a little over half a tank when trying to drop it.

Omaha,

I still have the stock lift pump for now. I have not installed a GDP kit. But I do know that the 03-04.5 trucks had the lift pump mounted originally from the factory on the back of the fuel filter canister. I thought you only had to use a different pick up tube on the tank if your truck (05-up or had a retrofit from the dealer) had the intank pump.

Did your truck have an in-tank pump or filter mounted pump?

When assembling the push lock hose and fittings, use some WD-40 in the hose and on the fitting. It makes them go together alot easier. I push them on by hand between my knees.( No jokes please!). Works on the race car, from -6 to -12, and DO bury them to the stop.
