While on vacation I changed my oil, filter, and fuel filter. When I went to prime the fuel filter nothing happened. The truck started and then died. About 2 1/2 years ago I swapped out the stock lift pump for a Walbro 392 system purchased here. I was in Idaho Falls and figured I could just get to NAPA and get a replacement, NOT. They didn't have one and had not heard of the Walbro 392.

Fortunately a kid that I had taught about 10 years ago when I was teaching was available and helped out and we were able to find a working Holley Blue pump. $40 for the pump, $10 for fittings and hose and I was back on the road.

So the question is, do I move to the Holley Blue and get a back up pump or do I look for a Walbro 392?

I believe you can buy a rebuild kit for the Holley Blue. Myself, I have a Holley Black under the back seat, with 89,000 on this BD Aux. (Carter), it just won't die, (It's like a Timex, just keeps on ticking)

 

Why no 3rd option for "other?" Walbro makes all kinds of suitable pumps. Holleys have reliability issues in diesel applications. Pretty limited pump option scope there....

 

I am open to other options but do have a limited budget. I wasn't really aware of other options short of FASS and AirDog. I will try to add Other to the Poll.

 

I just install a B-D max-flow. Seems to be working great. Not as pricey as the FASS or the Airdog but it is up there (just over $400).

I had a holley blue on my old chevy 6.2. It ran for the couple of years I had the truck and was still going strong when it was sold. I was told when I installed it, to remove the screen on the inlet side of the pump so it would last longer with diesel. The factory strainer screen causes too much of a restriction for diesel.

 

Thanks, Sinbadd. I will do that once it cools off a bit here. I have spent about 18 years here in the NW (split into 2 times) and this is the first year I know of where it has hit 100*+. They are setting records and I am not up to working on the truck at these temps.

Anyone know a good source for replacement Walbro pumps. I want to get one and have it on hand if needed. I will also install a pressure guage or indicator of some type.

 

I installed a Fuel Boss mechanical pump 18 months ago and have had no issues at all. It may be outside your budget, but you won't be disappointed.
