fuel economy
Have a 5.9 in 07 2500 ram auto quad long bed with 50k, Overhead instruments say i'm getting 17/ 18 mpg with a 4000lb camper @ 50/55mph on the flats. When I fill up and do the math with the dash and the gallons I take on board it's really 13/14mpg. Before I bought the trk I spoke with several guys who had a stock 5.9L and they bragged amout their 17/22mpg. So what's up? Constructive coments would be helpful.

with that camper on, it is like pushing a garage door down the road. those are good numbers for being loaded. take camper out and give it a shot and repost your results.

Also if you still have lower miles on that truck, you won't see max mileage until it breaks in fully. Mine jumped from 19 empty to 21 empty around the 70k mark. Otherwise, I agree with the others above, sounds normal. Do the same with any gas powered truck and see what you get.
I was just getting worried that my 15.7mpg was pretty crappy compared to the threads on mileage out on this forum. I still think it is. I have my Smarty Jr set at SW2 and with all the rain around here I really have not had my foot in it. Before Smarty, my OVHD would read 16.5mpg just before a fillup. Hand calc'd it was 15.3 - 15.5. Now, my OVHD reads 18.8mpg right before a fillup and I just got 15.7mpg actual. I might as well go to SW3 and drive the crap out of it and enjoy the performance (once I get a dry day). I have no other mods except what's in the sig and 35" tires with stock 3.73 gears. Perhaps the tire's part of the problem, but I also only have 26k on the truck (still tight?).
Yes, 35's will make a big difference... on average 2mpg less. It is not just the gearing, it is a lot of extra weight and rolling resistance over the stock tires. The lift makes a difference too...
