Exaust sysyem
By far the most economical would be to cut out the muffler, and put in a piece of straight pipe. Most muffler shops will do it for $30-60, in an hour or two. Thats what I did to mine, and it is just right soundwise. Not to loud, no drone, and a very deep tone. Yes, doing a big 5" cat back exhaust system my sound a bit different and flow just a hair more exhaust, but for the price you can't beat a simple muffler delete.
I did the straight pipe and really liked it untill i hooked up to my horse trailer. When towing the drone is really bad. I'm now getting ready to put a donaldson muffler in to get rid of the drone.
not sure how well it sounds or performs, but i have been contemplating the afe turbo back aluminized kit. saw it on ebay for $239.

I ran around with straight pipe for awhile. I recently put on a small Magnaflow resonator with an AeroTurbine 4040XL muffler. Nice deep tone and I noticed a gain in performance over the striaght pipe. Not too loud where it'll wake the neighbors, but when accelerating you know the exhaust as been altered. Hope this helps.

Unless you're making over 600 HP the pipes on your truck are fine, just get rid of the muffler, look at Nelson or Donaldson.
My gallery has pics and part numbers of my 40" Nelson.

. But no power gain. Similary, many things that claim to increase fuel economy, and people see this result, but more so because they spent money to get better fuel economy and they drive easier. Their results that might disappear as their driving habits return to normal.
Often times after spending money on something, we want so bad to believe it helps that we "feel" the gain in power. I don't see how going from the zero restriction of a straight pipe to any muffler will increase power. Sound will be different, sure, maybe even sound better

I dont feel that I need to justify my costs with a pretend power gain. Just having a quieter truck that doesnt rattle the coins in my ash tray is enough for me. Under acceleration I seem to have noticed that it accelerated quicker. Maybe not, but it definatly felt faster. Maybe one day i'll throw my truck on the rollers with and without an exhaust system and see what we come up with.
In all fairness I haven't pulled anything with my straight pipe, so I can't speak of the drone while towing. My friends make fun of me for having a diesel with nothing to tow. I make fun of them because I have alot more horsepower and TONS more torque while getting better fuel economy. And the ability to push my cummins to crazy power numbers in the future. Even at the current $3.89/gal price here in San Antonio, I think it is worth it to have a diesel.
