Engine lugging with Smarty
Engine lugging with Smarty
I am running the latest version with mild torque mgt. on level 3. Today I noticed while going up a steep grade for approx 1/4 mile that if I didn't have my usual momentum, (because of the ice), the trans would not downshift. So I hit the skinny pedal to try and get it to downshift and, the engine started to lug and the egt's shot up, but I also developed a weird vibration-type noise, other than the exhaust noise. I have never heard the noise before today, it was almost like a driveline vibration. I am not as concerned with the noise as I am about the trans not downshifting. If I have good momentum I can easily build 32 psi boost going up the hill and no shifting problems. With the truck stock, it usually downshifts about half way up the hill. Should I try the aftermarket turbo program? I am running the x2 but keep it turned off most of the time and use it basically for the rail pressure guage and boost fooling. Any input is greatly appreciated.
If that is a stock tranny I would think you experienced TC shudder/ Slip. Did you try to kick it out to Tow/haul? That is what I would of done. With an 06' that should of changed the shift point and kicked it down to 3rd if it was gonna happen.
Forgot to mention with that ice you could of experienced some wheel hop.

thats what im thinking...what were your rpms doing? did it sound like it unlocked but didnt?

Rpm's were definitely down, not quite sure what they were. I am pretty sure that the TC was still locked. Why wouldn't it unlock as usual? I guess I need to get a better run at it next time, or hit the tow/haul button. Just seems like a pain.
There are only 2 ways it will unlock, one is if you kickdown to third, it will unlock for the shift and lock back up. The only other way for it to unlock is to be goings speeds down around 40 MPH.
I have had it happen to me 2 times. Both on the same trip. I was at 55-60 mph and rpms were around 1600-1700. Stepped on the go pedal pulling heavy up a good size hill and my RPM's rose about 150 rpm but my speed stayed the same and I was locked in 4th. When it did it I just back off the go pedal. I didn't want it to eat itself. To make it shudder you slipped it perty good. Mine never shuddered.....
