What is considered lugging?

What rpm is considered lugging with an auto tranny? I've heard the general rule with the manuals is not to go below 1500, especially when towing. Do the same guidelines apply to the auto? Or is it more of a "you have to feel it" thing?

Thanks,
Russ

Re:What is considered lugging?

It's about the same for an auto. If you press on the gas pedal and the engine has to really struggle to gain any RPM's/speed, then you are lugging it. Get up to 55mph and shift into OD and press hard on the pedal, almost to the point of downshifting. When I do that on mine, it hardly accelerates. Then again, the 3.54 and 33" tires probably don't help that but you get the general idea.

WHY is it bad to lug the motor under 1500 rpms. Stupid question but sometimes I shift out at 1700 and it goes to about 1300. Now Im not getting on it when I do this but just cruising. I just never heard of this and I do it.

Cause the holding power of the clutch/TC isn't strong enough at that low of an rpm and the torque of the engine at that low is to strong.

Thats good to have the power down low. If the clutch can handle it, is it bad for the motor?
