Dual Disk clutch characteristics

I got a South Bend 3250 DD clutch in my truck and i am just wondering what the characteristics are of Dual Disk clutch. Mine seems to work well, deff different from stock. It chatters in nutreual with the clutch released and goes away as soon as i push the clutch in. When I take off in second gear its a little grabby and can be difficult to take off smoothly, the third and final thing is that when i am in fifth gear, and fifth only, it is loud untill i get up abouve 1500 RPMs. It sounds very similar to when the truck is in nuetral with the clutch released. I assume that these characteristics are normal and just come with the territory of a dual disk. Thanks for the insight.

sprung hub or solid. 12 or 6 buttons? ceramic, feramic?

my sb385012cbsp has a little clatter at idle, but not bad. I run up the high idle to about 1000 rpm, and it goes away. Other than that, it's quiet. It's a bit grabby on takeoffs, but that's what it's designed to do, not slip. I don't have any 5th gear noise problems.

I also have the 3250 12cb DD.
Starting off can be a little grabby. But if you purposely slip your clutch a couple times it will make things smoother from then on.
I have 5th gear noise just like that... but I thought it was my bearings starting to go bad.

The noises you hear are normal for a solid hub dual disk. Basically the lack of springs in the hubs is transferring torsional vibrations through the input shaft of the transmission and causing a gear clatter.

The clutch that I got was the one on sale at the dtr store a little while back. It is non sfi approved and rated for 550hp. The through out bearing was bad on my stock setup and was replaced when the new one went in. The chattering in fifth gear is the only I wonder about. Thanks for the input

Is this bad for it or is it not harmful?

It's harder on the transmission than not having those vibrations going through it. Of course, putting hundreds of horsepower more than stock through the tranny is harder on it as well. It's not something that's going to break the tranny soon, but I believe it contributes to wearing the gears, shafts, and bearings faster over the long haul. It is one of the cons of running a solid hubbed disc, unfortunately.

Hey banshee, I think the clutch they have is the sprung hub non sfi rated that was on sale here on DTR. My friend has one on his truck and he has all the above listed noises except for the 5th gear rattle.Don't know why you guys have that.Maybe its a g56 thing?

Banshee, would you mind pm'ing me with your number.I've got a few questions about the Haisley DD you run.You are the only one I know of that has any reliable input on it.
Thanks

Homewrecker, you friend put one of these clutches in a NV5600? So he doesnt have the 5th gear rattle huh? The 5th gear rattle is only when i am below 1500 RPMs. I dont like to stomp on it in 5th because of this. Anyone else have any input on it? Thanks

No, he has a G56 but I have never noticed the 5th gear rattle.I have rode in and drove his truck numerous times.Maybe its because he and myself never have been lugging 5th gear out. I know on my NV it will make some noise in the taller gears if the rpm's are too low but its not overly loud.Maybe a DD amplifies it, I don't know being I run an ofe single.

I have the same issue in 5th gear, if its below say 1200rpms, it will rattle like crazy i have gotten use to it, i thought it was a dual disk thing, i have the 3600 sprung hub version, thats my only concern with the clutch, it hold good and is decently smooth once you get use to the way it takes off, i have learned to give it just a tad of fuel and it seems to smooth out!

That's a nice clutch. I drove an '05 G-56 locally here. Two things did bother me; the neutral clatter(minimal) and the reluctance to downshift into 2nd at low speed without rpm matching. We're talking a slow walk, not slow speed. I'm not high horsepower guy,so an OFE's gonna do it for me. Peter's working on a much quieter DD.

How often do you gear down into 2nd? I rarely do.
I like my OFE so far though.

I have a 3600 DD with the g56 and it rattles and clatters in 5th sometimes. I can get it to do it in 4th to if you slow down enough and let ther rpms die, stomp on it it'll rattle then to. When i first put it in it rattled so much i was sure something was wrong. I think the throw out bearing was used from my stock clutch (which was completely fried). I really need to check it but i haven't gotten to it yet.

It may rattle a lot and people may alway ask what the noise is but i could care less as long as it's holding my power.
