Question Drilling and Tapping

So I'm gonna devote all day tomorrow to installing my gauges. I have pretty much everything figured out.

Just a couple of last questions.

When I'm installing the thermocouple, will it by itself be air tight enough not to produce exhaust leaks? I plan on applying some anitseize stuff and maybe that will help, but not sure? Same with the intake side.

Tranny Temp sender. Where should I mount this at? If in the pan, where exactly? I also saw a thread about placing it in some test port. Ideas?

Thanks In Advance

David

The pyro probe is pipe thread, so it is tapered. It will seal itself. And yes, using 1500°F antisieze is a good idea.

No help on the tranny stuff

well i have tranny temp sensor in my pan .. i went with a mag-hytec pan it has the thread hole for the sender all ready in it .. alot guys get a new transmission cooler line and put it in there they are avaliable at.. http://www.massdiesel.com/d24/amtransmission.htm
DO NOT !! use the test ports in the tranny , they don't give a accutrate reading of the fluid and you can cause damgae to your tranny doing so ... good luck ...

I never heard of using the test ports as damaging.... I wonder why some companys actually recomend installing them there if it threatens the tranny. I've had mine there for a few thousand miles and no problem, however will move it to the pan once I get one (which may be a while) Anybody ever have problems with mounting it there? Other than it's not the most acurate.

I have mine in the test port and have had no problems at all. Matter of fact this is where most gauge instructions will tell you to put it on the new trannys. As far as inacurate readings that is bologna as well. My readings are the exact same as the guy I work with that has the x-monitor for his gauge set up. IMHO the test port is the best and the easiest place to put the sensor as there is no cutting lines and no drilling holes to install.

just my .02

well there is no cutting cooler lines or drilling holes in my suggestions either .. it's funny i did extensive reading on here and on other fourms and i didnt read in one plce where is was suggested to put the sensor in the test ports , guys selling you the gauges say to put it there because it is an easy place to put the sensor .. dosn't mean it is the correct place to put it !! i am no tranny expert but i m sure there is a few on the board . and i am sure they would not suggest using the test ports .. only M H O

I'm not sure about the test ports either, but...

I'm always open for opinions.

If the test posrts are a bad idea, where in the pan should I tap it? towards the front, side...?

This obviously is not a do it yourself project, right?????? What tools are needed, and what are the steps in doing this, please give lots of detail!

It is a do it yourself project.

I've been leary of doing it myself, but since there is a lacking supply of shops to install the stuff. I'm pretty much left to doing it on my own. I keep researching and getting my ducks in a row. Asking questions that I need, covering all directions, and take my time. I'm fairly confident that a person who hates drilling into metal and wiring up stuff taht I can do it.

That tranny in line cooler seems nice, but I heard many complain of leaking after its done. I too am stuck as to where I will hook up my sensor for the trans. I may just go ahead and put it in the "B" test port as shown in the above pic and see how that works out. Is the in line tran just a unscrew and then screw in the new line or is there cutting involved? I hate cutting a perfect non leaking line.
