Do AFE and similar intakes quickly lead to dirty filters?

Do AFE and similar intakes quickly lead to dirty filters?

Hi.

I'm trying to decide on an intake for my truck. It seems that the open style like AFE/Quad are the most popular. My concern is that they would get dirty A LOT faster than an enclosed filter like the S&B/Volant/etc. It's not uncommon to be very dusty when we go to MX tracks and even at an idle my truck throws up a lot of dust. Do these open style filters get as dirty as it looks like they would? (I realize they aren't quite as open as they look when the hood is closed)

Thanks!

Yeah they do get dirty quick. If you keep the prefilter sleeve on it that will help.

Yes they do get dirty faster. I bought the prefilter for mine, basically a sock that goes over the filter, and will see how it works when it gets dusty out.

And yes the pre filter works wonders with dust....our plant site is dusty, and the prefilter catches alot of it!!

I have the same problem you have with the dusty conditions you find at MX races as I'm usually somewhere racing every weekend. With my S&B intake, I usually get in 5k miles before it needs to be cleaned but my truck sees 99% highway other than the occasional trip down a dirt road to get to a track.

Ramtd02 - I take it you work in Fort Mac? Probably seen you on the highway a few times. When in the week do you pass through?
